Job Summary

Job Summary

Under moderate supervision supports planning operations by assisting with zoning land use and development review activities. Performs entry to professional-level urban planning work including interpreting regulations reviewing permits conducting research supporting public engagement efforts and assisting with planning projects and administrative tasks. Ensures compliance with applicable codes ordinances and development standards while providing customer service to the public and stakeholders.

Examples of Duties

Planning Technician

  • Provides technical assistance to staff planners and the public regarding planning programs and regulations.
  • Assists with public outreach and community engagement initiatives.
  • Reviews building zoning and special event permits for compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares basic staff reports recommendations maps charts and tables.
  • Conducts research and compiles data on planning-related issues.
  • Assists with site inspections and monitoring of development activities.
  • Maintains records files and tracking systems.
  • Performs GIS-related tasks including basic spatial analysis and mapping.
  • Supports daily office operations such as data entry answering phones and customer service.
  • Assists with public meetings and prepares supporting materials.
  • Verifies compliance with development requirements through field inspections.

Planner I

  • Interprets zoning codes ordinances and regulations for the public and professionals.
  • Reviews permits site plans and subdivision plats for compliance.
  • Performs GIS data management and spatial analysis.
  • Prepares reports recommendations and draft ordinances.
  • Conducts field inspections of properties and development sites.
  • Presents planning matters to boards committees and public groups.
  • Assists with planning initiatives outreach and community engagement.
  • Advises on updates to regulations and comprehensive planning efforts.
  • Coordinates with consultants engineers and other stakeholders.

Typical Qualifications

Planning Technician

  • Associates degree in urban planning geography architecture construction management social sciences or related field
  • Some relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and training
  • Valid drivers license

Planner I

  • Bachelors degree in urban planning geography public administration or related field
  • 6 months to 1 year of relevant planning experience
  • Valid drivers license
