JOB PURPOSE
Reporting to the Director Student Affairs the Accessibility Advisor is to actively engage with students on and offsite establishing trust providing referrals and resources as well as advocating for access to services. The Accessibility Advisor will develop a strong knowledge of community resources and connect with community partners. The Accessibility Advisor will also engage collaboratively with SNPs Student Affairs team members instructors and service providers.
The Accessibility Advisor is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff students stakeholders and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ganigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Student Navigation30%
- Taking the lead role with new Accessible Learning students intake which involves meeting with new intakes supporting completion of intake forms gather documentation and arranging appointments;
- With student consent liaising between students faculty student success officers and other campus partners regarding the provision of accommodations and student support;
- Providing wellness check-ins while students are on wait lists for community programs;
- Providing disability-related academic advising for students with learning mental health and physical sensory and medical disabilities on issues relating to academic social and interpersonal issues;
- Creating SNP Accessibility Services supporting guidelines for academic accommodations;
- Triaging intakes for students requesting accommodations and providing interim accommodations;
- Maintaining notes in the record management system pertaining to navigation interactions;
- With student consent joining agency/specialization service sessions to facilitate introduction/warm transfer or to support students through the support process;
- Supporting a multidisciplinary team with the development of care paths with students;
- Using Ministry requirements provincial legislation and standards of practice to design appropriate and individualized academic accommodation plans on a temporary or ongoing basis
- Ongoing evaluation of the needs of students with learning mental health physical sensory and medical disabilities to determine any changes in conditions or accommodation needs and provide services as required under Human Rights legislation and SNP Personnel policies;
- Researching and communicating information to students regarding financial support available to students with disabilities;
- Developing relationships with community agencies including maintaining applicable databases of community resources (availability wait lists and eligibility requirements);
- Connecting with external health providers and community agencies to request clinical records discharge summaries or other required documentation/clinical information;
- Locating resources and solutions to support students in a resource care community often requiring novel solutions and managing multiple interacting social and health needs
- Other related duties asrequired.
SNP Testing Centre 15%
- Acting as liaison between students and various departments/staff/faculty to resolve issues regarding tests and testing accommodations deferred exams and short-term accommodation assessments;
- Providing quality test administration in a professional secure and positive environment that enables students to demonstrate their learning;
- Addressing the needs of students in a high-stress environment where students may experience challenges such as test-taking anxiety and heightened medical symptoms;
- Other related duties asrequired.
Service Development and Implementation 15%
- Assisting in the design and/or implementation of programs and services that encourage students to grow personally to be effective;
- Functioning as a resource for clients families health care providers and other community partners;
- Engaging in internal and external promotion of departmental services and programs;
- Providing assistance with program statistics and data tracking;
- Engaging in job related training and education;
- Participating in SNP committees as requested and report back to Student Affairs team;
- Other related duties asrequired.
Health & Safety 15%
- Working awareness of health and safety hazards on the job and how to prevent them including working alone and working after hours;
- Creating a health and safety plan alongside the Director Student Affairs;
- Other related duties asrequired.
General Administration 20%
- Completing administrative tasks such as regular reports surveys and data collection;
- Following guidelines for student files;
- Processing requests for information/documentation from student files and prepares letters in draft for Directors signature to release contents of student files to approved agencies;
- Monitoring generic email accounts for referrals to internal and community resources answering services related questions;
- Other related duties asrequired.
EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE
Completion of a formal post-secondary college or university in Health Sciences Social Sciences or in a related field from an accredited University.
EXPERIENTIAL KNOWLEDGE / CULTURE AND LANGUAGE EXPERTISE
Over 3 years and including 5 years of experience in a similar role
