Job Summary

Gillette Childrens is seeking a Pediatric Neurohospitalist in St. Paul MN. Each physician employed by Gillette Childrens is expected to carry out our mission and vision by centering the focus of care on the patient and family.

Practice Details:

  • FTE: Open to full or part time
  • Full Time Schedule: 4 clinic days and one admin day/week
  • Opportunity for research
  • Gillette Childrens is a 60 bed hospital including 12 EEG/VEEG wired beds
  • Established specialty clinics for coordinated care
  • Other Specialties: EEG lab Ketogenic Dieticians Pediatrics Complex Care Neurosurgery and more.

Purpose of Position:

Each physician employed by Gillette Childrens is expected to carry out our mission and vision by centering the focus of care on the patient and family. This will be accomplished by the following:

  1. Care of patients (clinical work)
  2. Education (of self and others in the organization)
  3. Inquiry (research and outcomes assessment)
  4. Participation in the systems and processes of Gillette.

Core Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Each neurologist provides direct patient care through a combination of services based on patient needs and the training and skills of the neurologist.
    • Neurologists schedule patient care availability according to patient needs and with approval by the Chief of Neurology..
    • Neurologists participate in a team-based approach to patient care.

Patient care responsibilities may include:

    • Outpatient clinic
      • Perform evaluations and formulate management plans for new patients with neurological concerns.
      • Perform appropriate re-evaluations as scheduled as well as urgent/emergent follow up of those patients who are established in our care.
      • Request appropriate diagnostic testing and follow up on results.
      • Answer phone calls and messages from families and providers regarding patient care issues between visits. This is done in coordination with outpatient nursing services and the Nurse Helpline.
      • Document work done in an appropriate and timely manner.
    • Participating in the work of the Neurodiagnostic Laboratory (NDL) as privileges allow:
      • Interpreting EEG and Video EEGs.
      • Provide Intraoperative monitoring.
      • EMG/NCS
    • Other patient care duties:
      • Management of Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) devices.
      • Optional - Provide Lumbar Puncture (LP) services.

Education (of self and others in the organization)

  • Engage in ongoing training
    • Complete required training annually.
    • Participate in continuing education and learning opportunities as appropriate
  • Contribute to education programs
      • Participate in graduate and post-graduate education programs
        • Assist in instructing pediatric residents on their neurology elective from the University of Minnesota.
        • Train and supervise child neurology residents from the University of Minnesota.
        • When applicable participate in the training of University of Minnesota Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellows on rotation.
        • Other lectures conferences mentoring and evaluations.
      • Participate in the education of Gillette personnel by participating in functions (e.g. Grand Rounds) when possible.

              Inquiry (research and outcomes assessment)

              • Support research and outcome assessment
                • Participate in research opportunities as interests and time constraints allow.
                • Support data collection needs related to research and outcomes assessment.
                • Support the translation of research and outcome measurement into practice.
              • Share research and outcomes assessment findings through publications conference presentations etc.

                Compensation and Benefits Information:

                Pay is dependent on several factors including relevant work experience and internal equity. Salary is just one component of the compensation package for employees. Sign-on and relocation bonus available for those who qualify.

                Qualifications:

                Required

                • Meets the qualifications to practice medicine in the State of Minnesota including DEA license.
                • Current certification in CPR (BLS for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association) or must obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
                • Board certified/eligible in pediatric neurology. Board-eligible hires will be expected to become board-certified within two years of hire. This timeline can extend pending specific circumstances reviewed by the Chief of Neurology and the Chief Medical Officer.

                Preferred

                • Epilepsy/neurophysiology fellowship

                Knowledge Skills and Abilities

                • Clinical proficiency in area of pediatric neurology specialty.
                • Demonstrated expertise in the management of patients with complex chronic conditions.
                • Demonstrated ability to build the trust and respect of patients staff colleagues and external contacts.
