Position: Lawyer and Manager

Location: Legal Resource Centre Newton

Hours: 35 hours Mon Fri

Salary: $52.20 per hour to $54.95 per hour (based on experience)

Start Date: May 15 2026

We are looking for a Lawyer/Manager to join our Legal Services team! Ideally the Lawyer/Manager is responsible for supervision administration program development and implementation of the Community Law Clinic. Other duties include supervision and recruitment of program staff and participants coordination of services with The Law Foundation of BC and other internal and external services. The Manager is responsible for ensuring the high-quality services using effective business practices and meeting operational standards that align with funder regulatory and accreditation standards. Effective communication and collaboration with community stakeholders and funders is required.

Description of Position:

Reporting to: Executive Director Community Services.

Program-specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal advice and representation (at administrative tribunal or judicial review) to clients as it pertains to their poverty law issues.
  • Supports in-house advocacy team with legal opinion on cases and work in partnership on complex cases.
  • Works with the legal community to identity systemic barriers and support test cases that will improve the lives of clients who access poverty law services.
  • Provides public legal education (PLE) on occasion as required.
  • Screens and identifies the legal issues according to the program guidelines and funding mandate.
  • Provides emotional support legal resources information and appropriate referrals by telephone website email and appointment.
  • Ensures the maintenance of program standards policies and program guidelines.
  • Supervises employees provides guidance and performs all supervisory duties.
  • Ensures the maintenance of Society policies and procedures (including personnel policies).
  • Participates in quality improvement and evaluation processes.
  • Engages in ongoing learning and professional development related to Indigenous histories cultures and perspectives and applying this knowledge to workplace.
  • Creates and maintains a safe and welcoming environment within the organization and addresses any instances of discrimination harassment or other forms of harmful behaviour that dont support the principles of diversity equity inclusion and belongingness

Qualifications:

  • Member of the BC Bar in good standing with a minimum of 3 years of experience preferably in Administrative Law. Priority will be given to applicants with 5 years.
  • Solid experience appearing before administrative tribunals including the Employments Standards Tribunal Employment and Assistance Appeal Tribunal Social Security Tribunal Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal and Residential Tenancy Branch.
  • Experience supporting and advocating for marginalized individuals.
  • Program administration evaluation and development experience.
  • Knowledge of community resources and other social service agencies.
  • Knowledge of Legal Services policies and procedures.
  • Ability to run an organized caseload from beginning to end.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients who are experiencing a wide range of sensitive issues.
  • Training and/or experience using empathetic listening skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy is mandatory.
  • Must possess a vehicle and a current drivers license.
