About the role
We have an opportunity for an experienced licensed animal technician to join our leading research establishment.
The BSU plays a crucial role in UCBs drug discovery its necessary to conduct in-vivo experiments we are dedicated to providing the highest welfare standards and always consider ethical implications.
The staff in the unit are specialists in providing practical in-vivo support and advise for scientists as well as providing an outstanding environment and care for the animals housed. Optimising housing conditions reducing stress and refining all human interactions with our animals are key to our ethics standards and scientific models. We expect the Technicians to be proactive with these refinements and set examples for the unit.
The facilities will fully relocate to Windlesham Surrey in early 2027; however some travel will be required toward the end of 2026. Staff will be expected to support the preparation and transition activities including establishing processes at the new facility to ensure regulatory compliance and to facilitate the successful introduction of animals in optimal conditions.
You will be able to work as a team with a flexible approach. To work additional hours when required this will include occasional weekends (1 in 4) and Bank Holidays.
Who youll work with
Our small team in the BSU and scientists.
What youll do
- Responsible for keeping all animal room areas clean and tidy in alignment with UCB standards.
- Prepare equipment and cages for weekly use.
- Check animals on a daily basis and complete routine husbandry.
- Be proactive creative and innovative regarding housing environmental enrichment playtime and interaction for animals.
- Provide the greatest care and respect for our animals.
- Assisting/completing In-vivo experiments.
- Liaising with scientists to ensure Animal Scientific Procedures Act (ASPA) is adhered to.
- Assist in training other staff members.
- Acting as a Named Animal Care & Welfare Officer (NACWO).
Interested For this role were looking for the following education experience and skills
- Knowledge of Animals Scientific Procedures Act (ASPA).
- Home Office License Holder PIL A-B.
- NACWO qualifications or a willing to achieve
- Experience of working with rodents and enthusiasm for animal welfare.
- Competent in a variety of licensed procedures and a desire to continue learning.
- Ability to commute to sites in both Slough and Windlesham.
