Medical Coding and Billing Specialist Job Description 8am-430pm
Position Summary:
A Medical Coding and Billing Specialist is responsible for reviewing patient records assigning standardized codes to diagnoses and procedures and ensuring accurate billing and reimbursement from insurance companies and patients. This role plays a key part in maintaining compliance accuracy and efficiency in healthcare revenue cycles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review patient medical records for accuracy and completeness
- Assign appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes using systems like ICD-10 CPT and HCPCS
- Prepare and submit medical claims to insurance companies
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and coverage
- Follow up on unpaid or denied claims and resolve billing issues
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and coding guidelines
- Maintain patient billing records and update information as needed
- Communicate with healthcare providers insurance companies and patients regarding billing questions
- Process payments and manage accounts receivable
- Stay updated on coding changes and industry regulations
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Knowledge of medical terminology anatomy and healthcare procedures
- Familiarity with coding systems (ICD-10 CPT HCPCS)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with billing software and electronic health records (EHR) systems
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality (HIPAA compliance)
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Associate degree in Health Information Technology or related field (preferred)
Certification such as:
- CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
- CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
Previous experience in medical billing/coding or healthcare administration (preferred)
