A Substitute School Nurse provides temporary nursing coverage when the regular school nurse is absent. The substitute nurse delivers health services to students manages the school clinic administers medications and responds to injuries or illnesses while following the Guidelines for Use of Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Procedures in a School Setting and Arlington Community Schools district policies. The role supports student health safety and attendance to promote academic success.
Qualifications:
Must hold an active and unencumbered Registered Nurse License for the State of Tennessee
Bachelors Degree or higher preferred
Minimum three years clinical experience school nurse experience preferred
Current American Heart Association CPR/BLS certification
Excellent communication skills
Knowledge of pediatric care and emergency response
Ability to maintain accurate records and follow health regulations
Experience in pediatric public health or school nursing preferred
Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Provide first aid emergency care and illness assessment for students
Assess student complaints and determine appropriate treatment or referral
Monitor and care for students with acute or chronic health conditions
Promote a safe and healthy school environment
Administers medications and treatments according to physician orders and district policy
Monitor students taking medication during the school day
May perform nursing procedures such as: Blood glucose monitoring insulin injections insulin pump management tube feedings nebulizer treatments catheterization tracheal suctioning ventilator care
Provide health education and anticipatory guidance to students
Communicate with parents teachers administrators and healthcare providers
Refer students to medical care when necessary
Maintain and update student health records and clinic documentation
Document injuries treatments and parental notifications
Maintain confidentiality according to FERPA and HIPAA regulations
Follow Individual Health Plans (IHPs) and emergency action plans
Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent Principal Coordinated School Health Nurse Supervisor
Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Working Conditions:
This job operates in a clinic setting or nurses office within elementary middle or high schools with access to medical equipment.
This role routinely uses a variety of medical devices and instruments to assess the medical needs of children
May involve exposure to illnesses and communicable diseases
Follows student medical Health plans and monitors the implementation
Consistent and prompt attendance is imperative for this role
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to
Communicate and listen (students parents teachers administration)
Stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
Regularly move about inside the classroom/school/clinic
Ability to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds
Quick response in emergencies
