We are excited to offer an exceptional opportunity to join our Cardiothoracic Surgery Critical Care Team as a Physician Assistant / Associate (PA) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP / AGACNP / ACNP-AG). Our APPs play an integral role in comprehensive perioperative care managing patients across the full continuumfrom initial consultation through postoperative recovery and discharge. You will work alongside experienced cardiothoracic surgeons APPs and multidisciplinary professionals in a high-acuity cutting-edge environment.
Key Responsibilities
Critical Care Management
- Manage patients recovering from complex cardiothoracic surgeries including:
- Aortic surgery
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
- Thoracic surgery
- Valve surgery
Mechanical Circulatory Support Collaboration
- Partner closely with attending physicians and APP colleagues in the management of advanced mechanical circulatory support devices including:
- ECMO
- Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABPs)
- Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs)
- Impella
- Right Ventricular Assist Devices (RVADs)
Procedural Skills Development
- Perform and refine common ICU procedures including:
- Bronchoscopy
- Central venous catheter placement
- Arterial line insertion
- Chest tube management
Patient Experience & Quality of Care
- Focus on optimizing patient experience satisfaction and clinical outcomes
- Deliver high-quality evidence-based perioperative care
Diagnostic & Clinical Decision-Making
- Order and interpret relevant diagnostic studies
- Apply clinical judgment to guide timely and appropriate interventions
Emergency Response
- Respond to critical and emergent situations
- Provide rapid assessment and stabilization until definitive treatment is implemented
Ideal Candidate
- Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Strong interest or background in cardiothoracic surgery and/or critical care
- Comfortable practicing with a high level of autonomy in a fast-paced ICU setting
- Committed to teamwork clinical excellence and continuous professional growth
What We Require:
Education: Graduate of an Accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
Experience: 0
Licensure/Certification: Current state Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP) and RN licensure required or Physician Assistant ( PA) DEA license . AHA BLS-HCP certification required. Advanced Life Support certification preferred. Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
Other: Able to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers good written and oral communication skills. Computer literacy required for automated computer systems including electronic medical records.
