The Opportunity
Barking is an area of profound historical significance from its roots as the home of one of the most influential medieval abbeys in England to its role in the industrial and social evolution of East London. We are seeking a dynamic History Teacher to join our Humanities faculty. This role involves teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 with the potential for Key Stage 5 delivery. You will be responsible for helping students navigate the complexities of the past encouraging them to think critically about power identity and the forces that have shaped our modern world.
The Department
You will join a vibrant Humanities team that treats History as a living subject frequently utilizing Londons world-class museums and archives as extended classrooms.
The department is well-resourced with a diverse range of primary and secondary sources digital archives and interactive tools designed to bring different eras to life.
We prioritize a Global Histories curriculum ensuring students study a broad spectrum of time periods and regions from the Silk Roads and the British Empire to the Civil Rights movements of the 20th century.
We benefit from a strong culture of academic debate encouraging students to challenge interpretations and develop their own evidence-based historical arguments.
Core Responsibilities
Delivering high-impact lessons that develop students chronological understanding and their ability to analyse cause consequence and significance.
Teaching students how to evaluate source material for bias reliability and utility fostering the critical thinking skills essential for modern citizenship.
Preparing Year 11 and Year 13 students for GCSE and A-Level examinations with a particular focus on structured essay writing and high-level historical analysis.
Implementing effective literacy strategies to help students master the complex vocabulary and formal writing styles required for the subject.
Leading or contributing to extracurricular initiatives such as History clubs Heritage Week events or student-led research projects into local Barking history.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a storyteller and an analyst who can make the distant past feel immediate and relevant. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in History or a related field.
A proven ability to motivate students of all backgrounds fostering a genuine enthusiasm for historical enquiry and debate.
Strong subject knowledge across a variety of periods and themes with a commitment to inclusive and representative curriculum design.
Excellent pedagogical skills particularly in the use of questioning and modelling to deepen students historical thinking.
