Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY

This is skilled journeyman-level work in the painting of buildings fixtures signs and equipment (on a commercial level) in the Culpeper County School System. Employee performs minor repairs as required. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Maintenance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The minimum performance expectations include but are not limited to the following functions/tasks:

  • Prepares a variety of interior and exterior surfaces to be painted by scraping caulking stripping sand blasting power washing and spot priming;
  • Mixes paints stains and varnishes; tints paints to customer specifications;
  • Builds and tears down scaffolding as required;
  • Applies paints on a variety of surfaces using standard methods to include spray applications;
  • Performs repairs to ceilings windows and other areas associated to painting projects;
  • Responds to emergency duty assignments when required;
  • Maintains records of time and materials used on assigned projects;
  • Leads or instructs employees as delegated;
  • Responsible for scheduling of work;
  • Ordering materials as needed; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Graduation from high school or General Education (GED) is preferred;
  • Four (4) years of experience in all aspects of painting; or any combination of experience and training that would provide knowledge abilities and skills;
  • Or equivalent training education and/or experience.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the methods materials tools and practices of painting work.
  • Knowledge of the use of safety data sheets.
  • Ability to perform difficult painting and staining jobs.
  • Ability to work from ladders (including extension ladders) mechanical lifts and scaffolds (up to 50 feet in height).
  • Ability to comply with all safety rules and regulations of the trade.
  • Ability to prepare surfaces for painting and perform minor repairs related to painting projects.
  • Ability to mix paints and stains and to tint.
  • Ability to read to write and follow instructions.
  • Skill in the application of paint and other finishes and methods techniques and tools used in the trade.
  • Skill in the care and use of paint brushes spray guns and other painting tools.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia drivers license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed while the employee is regularly required to walk; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel objects; tools or controls; reach with hands and arms climb or balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment exposes the employee to occasionally working near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals risk or electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment may be at times low to moderate.
