BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION
When responding to emergencies or addressing structural food insecurity timely and accurate information is essential. Understanding who is food insecure how many people are affected where they live why they are food insecure and how the situation is likely to evolve enables the World Food Programme to design effective responses.
The Assessment and Targeting Unit supports this work by producing global and country-level food security analysis maintaining food security data systems and ensuring methodological consistency across regions. The unit collaborates closely with country offices regional offices and external partners to strengthen evidence generation and promote harmonised approaches to food security analysis.
The unit also contributes to major global publications including the Global Report on Food Crises and to analytical documents and platforms on key food security indicators and trends in close liaison with Regional and Country Offices as well as other partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the guidance of the VAM Officer (Global Needs) the fellow will support with the following tasks:
Conduct data analysis related to global needs and food insecurity trends using consolidated datasets from multiple sources and applying sound statistical methods.
Maintain and update a centralized food security database ensuring accuracy completeness and consistency across countries and regions (including but not limited to DataViz/Food Security Assessment Explorer).
Prepare methodologies and tools for data analysis and visualization and contribute to graphs tables and other visual summaries to support global analyses (including but not limited to internal dashboards).
Applying sound statistical and data analysis methodologies draft analytical sections for global reports and ad-hoc requests based on consolidated data and ensure partner inputs in case of revision rounds ensuring timely integration of feedback.
Support the harmonisation of methodologies terminology and analytical framing across publications.
Maintain close communication with regional offices country offices the Food and Agriculture Organization and other relevant units and agencies.
Contribute to analytical products presentations and briefing materials.
Conduct literature reviews on global food security trends and methodologies.
Perform any other tasks as requested by the supervisor.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE ASSIGNMENT
Contribution to the units analyses and publications.
Improved methodologies and tools to improve the quality of food security datasets and visualisations.
Advance innovative solutions and research on food security and nutrition data.
STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors Masters student or recent graduate in social sciences statistics economics data sciences geography development studies international relations or a related field.
Excellent written and spoken English (proficiency/level equivalent to C). Knowledge of French and/or another official UN language an asset.
Proficiency in statistical software packages required.
Excellent communication skills and working knowledge of PowerPoint required. Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau an asset.
SUPERVISION
The fellow will work under the direct supervision of the VAM Officer in charge of Global Needs and indirectly report to the Head of the Assessment & Targeting Unit.
TRAINING COMPONENTS
The fellow will have access to the WeLearn platform and may participate in workshops or seminars depending on availability and timing.
LEARNING ELEMENTS
By the end of the assignment the fellow should:
Be familiar with the global food security situation and the drivers of food insecurity.
Be familiar with food security methodology including key indicators.
Be able to conduct basic food security analysis at the global level that aims at informing WFP decision-making.
Have contributed to information products to share knowledge about the food security situation such as the Global Report on Food Crises.
Be able to maintain and update a food security database and conduct food security analysis and visualisation.
