Job Summary
Overview
The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) across Britains evolving railway to improve safety efficiency and sustainability. Were now seeking a Graduate Engineer - Rolling Stock to work across RSSB to gain a holistic insight into how we work and the challenges we face in providing a safe efficient and sustainable rail system.
You will be based within RSSBs Standards Rolling Stock Team which manages and drafts Rolling Stock Standards for GB and international railway systems. Its outputs include the GB Rail Standards catalogue providing support to Standards Committees System Interface Committees GB and international technical Working Groups. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience and to build your knowledge of standards technical research and railway systems. You will also have the opportunity to work with other Standards Teams including: Plant Infrastructure Energy and Control Command and Communications. You will build relationships across the railway industry and deliver a safer more efficient and sustainable rail system.
By the end of the programme and over the course of 36 months you will have built a professional network that will help you with your career within RSSB and beyond and with our support you will be on your way to achieving Chartered Engineer status (CEng). This role is based at our Fenchurch Avenue offices in London on a hybrid basis. The close date for this role will be Monday 4th May at 23:59. Early application is encouraged.
Responsibilities
These are the key activities that you are likely to be involved with:
- Developing knowledge of the Industrys Standards.
- Developing the Industrys Standards including National Technical Specification Notices; Railway Group Standards; Rail Industry Standards; and Rail Industry Guidance Notes.
- Participating in Standards Committees (SC) and Standards Interface Committees (SIC) through supporting and representing RSSB and Identifying opportunities and taking actions at SCs and SICs for RSSB to progress and resolve.
- Supporting the development of business cases that consider the needs of stakeholders.
- Representing Great Britain (GB) on international working groups and GB mirror groups including the development of CEN and ISO Standards.
- Supporting the development and delivery of RSSBs commercial offering (including helping with the delivery of training or consultancy services).
- Dealing with member enquires and input into Client Relationship Management (CRM).
- Managing changes and updates to Standards using Requirements Management Database (RMDB).
- Participating in RSSB Research Projects as a Technical Specialist in the projects Steering Group.
- Engaging and collaborating with RSSBs members who represent various areas of the rail sector in Great Britain.
- Participating in Industry Events e.g. IMechE Railway Challenge Young Members Presentation.
- Actively undertaking and committing to professional development activities including working towards IEng or CEng status.
Qualifications

- A minimum of a 2:1 Engineering degree preferably Masters that is accredited by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
- A willingness to learn about railway systems.
- Competence with Microsoft Office 365.
- A willingness to learn about relevant specialist software (e.g. multi-body simulation gauging data processing and AI tools).
- Adaptability and resilience you adapt to the situation; you are open to new ideas and challenges from others. You positively view change as well as manage and learn from challenging situations and work under pressure.
- Analytical thinker you can work with different kinds of information some of which is complex see patterns and trends and draw meaningful conclusions. You can adopt a methodical and logical approach in order to identify the relevant points from information and data and evaluate the most appropriate options to understand and address a problem.
- Collaboration and teamworkyou are a team player with the ability to take on responsibility and where relevant manage and delegate to others. You can build positive working relationships that help achieve goals and business objectives.
- Communication you can communicate orally and in writing - clearly and concisely to different audiences with a keen attention to detail. You can convey complex issues to non-technical users at all levels. You can actively listen to extract the necessary information to get to the heart of the matter.
