Job Summary
The Opportunity Derby is a city with a vibrant acoustic heritagefrom its historic cathedral choir to its thriving contemporary folk and rock scenes. We are seeking a Music Teacher who can inspire a diverse student body to find their creative voice. This role involves teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 balancing the development of practical performance skills with a deep understanding of music theory composition and the evolution of global genres.
The Department
You will be based in a dedicated Music suite featuring practice rooms a large ensemble space and a high-spec Mac lab for digital composition.
The department is equipped with industry-standard software (such as Logic Pro Sibelius and GarageBand) and a wide array of instruments from traditional orchestral pieces to contemporary band setups and world percussion.
We benefit from a strong team of peripatetic teachers who provide specialist instrumental and vocal tuition allowing the classroom teacher to focus on the broader curriculum and ensemble leadership.
We maintain active links with Derbys cultural hubs including the Derby Theatre and local recording studios providing students with professional-grade performance opportunities.
Core Responsibilities
Delivering high-energy lessons that engage students in the three core pillars of music education: Performing Composing and Appraising.
Developing a Key Stage 3 curriculum that is inclusive and varied covering everything from Western Classical traditions to Jazz Blues and modern Electronic Dance Music.
Preparing Year 11 students for GCSE Music (or BTEC Technical awards) guiding them through the rigors of performance assessments and the technical requirements of original composition.
Leading the schools extracurricular life by directing choirs orchestras or contemporary School of Rock ensembles and organizing seasonal concerts.
Teaching students how to use music technology effectively to capture edit and produce high-quality audio recordings.
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a versatile musician and educator who can lead by example. Requirements include:
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Music or Music Education.
High-level proficiency in at least one instrument (or voice) and the ability to accompany students or lead ensembles confidently.
A strong understanding of the current GCSE/Vocational assessment frameworks and a passion for contemporary music technology.
The ability to foster an inclusive environment where students of all musical backgrounds and abilities feel empowered to perform.
