:59 PMCBC Nova Scotia is seeking an experienced Copy Editor to join our digital team at As an accomplished journalist and exceptional news editor you will ensure the accurate and efficient delivery of news and features across our digital and social platforms.
This role requires a full-time on-site presence in Halifax
Your Role
You are a critical thinker and editorial leader with an uncompromising attention to detail. You will work collaboratively with reporters and producers across the province to craft engaging stories that resonate with contemporary Canada. You are a mentor at heart enjoying the process of coaching journalists to develop their digital writing skills and produce content of the highest quality.
You are comfortable making independent editorial decisions under the pressure of a 24/7 newsroom ensuring all work upholds CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Excellence: Copy edit breaking developing enterprise and feature news as well as multimedia projects social media copy and video titles.
Content Packaging: Build and package digital stories with a mobile-first mindset leveraging visual storytelling tools to enrich the audience experience.
Collaboration & Coaching: Work with writers and producers to develop story ideas and structure; provide thoughtful feedback and coaching to help staff and freelancers improve their skills.
Strategic Oversight: Monitor news developments to maintain a dynamic website lineup and communicate digital news best practices to the wider team.
Integrity & Standards: Identify and fix issues related to accuracy story flow and context while navigating legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Relevant Skills & Experience
Experience: Minimum five years of recent journalism experience with a focus on copy editing in a fast-paced multi-platform digital news environment.
Technical Proficiency: Aptitude with text and video content management systems (CMS) and a deep understanding of web mobile and social media tools.
Journalistic Standards: Deep knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) style and a firm understanding of CBCs JSP and legal vetting processes.
Leadership & Communication: Stellar interpersonal skills with a team-first attitude and the ability to work gracefully under strict deadlines.
Cultural Competence: A deep appreciation for diverse perspectives and a commitment to promoting an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Education: University degree in journalism or equivalent professional experience.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends early mornings and statutory holidays as required by the news cycle.
