Job Summary

The Opportunity Southend-on-Sea offers a vibrant coastal setting with a diverse demographic that serves as a living laboratory for sociological study. We are seeking a Sociology Teacher who can challenge students to look beyond the surface of society and examine the structures that shape human life. This role involves teaching at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 encouraging pupils to engage with complex themes of inequality power and social identity with a critical and informed perspective.


The Department

  • You will be part of a dynamic Social Sciences team that prioritizes contemporary relevance and academic debate.

  • The department utilizes a wide array of resources from classic sociological texts to modern case studies and media analysis tools.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Planning and delivering Sociology lessons that prepare students for GCSE and A-Level examinations with a focus on high attainment.

  2. Facilitating classroom discussions on sensitive social issues ensuring a balanced evidence-based and respectful environment.

  3. Teaching students how to apply sociological theoriessuch as Functionalism Marxism and Feminismto contemporary social phenomena.

  4. Developing students research skills including the ability to evaluate various quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches.

  5. Providing detailed feedback and exam-focused interventions to help students refine their essay-writing and evaluative skills.


The Successful Candidate We are looking for an inquisitive and articulate educator who can inspire students to question the status quo. Requirements include

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Sociology or a closely related Social Science discipline.

  • A comprehensive understanding of current A-Level and GCSE specifications and the ability to interpret data trends.

  • The capacity to make abstract social theories relatable and interesting to a diverse student body.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster a classroom culture built on mutual respect and intellectual curiosity.
