St Margarets College was founded in 1911 and is an independent Residential College with a long-established and formal affiliation to the University of Otago. A mid-sized College with 225 bedrooms it has developed an enviable reputation of excellence in the support and accommodation for its Members (tertiary students). The College prides itself on its strong academic support and providing rewarding social and cultural experiences with an ultimate aim of developing well rounded socially minded excellent citizens.
Located within the University campus enables students to experience campus life whilst ensuring easy access to student facilities and activities.
This is a unique live in position that reports to the College Council the Head of College provides strategic academic and day-to-day leadership of the College its members and staff. The Head of College also develops and leads a supportive and caring environment and creates a community in which members flourish academically creatively and as good citizens. This role requires extensive organisational planning and exceptional interpersonal skills to perform effectively and professionally in an increasingly challenging and complex tertiary environment. Within this is the ability to handle sometimes difficult and complex situations including the health and wellbeing of residents plus ensuring the safety of all staff.
In addition to the members the Head of College has overall responsibility for the 26 full/part-time staff and 11 College Leaders and is supported by two Deputy Heads (one academic and one welfare focused).
The ideal candidate should be someone with the following qualities/aptitudes:
A passion empathy and experience in working with Students.
Demonstrated ability to build and lead an academic community.
Exceptional leadership communication and interpersonal skills.
Highly developed problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
Have experience and aptitude with organising planning and budget management.
A post-graduate University qualification (preferably a doctorate).
Committed to maintaining high ethical standards in all academic and professional dealings have a strong moral compass and high integrity.
Knowledge and understanding of health and safety legislation and requirements.
Knowledge and understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
