Job Summary

Reports To: Director of Health Services

Duty Days: 187 Days

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: IS03

Qualifications:

College hours high school diploma or GED

Certification as a nurse aide medical assistant or EMT is preferred

CPR/AED certification and First Aid certification required

Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills

Ability to use computer

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)

Ability to physically transfer students with limited mobility in meeting personal needs

One year experience in health-related position preferred including contact with school-age students

Vision Hearing Acanthosis Nigricans and Scoliosis Screening Certification required once employed

Type 2 Diabetes Screening Certification required once employed

Skills training for emergency medication administration required once employed

Computer training for medical documentation required once employed

Dependable transportation for district-wide travel.

Primary Purpose:

Assist school nurses district-wide by assuming routine record keeping activities providing minor first aid care and conducting health screenings at campus level. Work under the direct and indirect guidance and direction of a licensed nurse.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Carry out first aid and emergency procedures for ill and injured students as directed by school nurse.
  2. Carry out specialized health care procedures as trained and directed by school nurse.
  3. Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures; maintain accurate log of medication dispensed.
  4. Assist with screening activities including measuring height and weight testing vision and hearing examining spinal cord acanthosis nigricans screening for diabetes and scalp.
  5. Escort students to and from clinic and assist students with disabilities as necessary.
  6. Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care.
  7. Keep nurses office clean and sanitary.
  8. Record information on student health records.
  9. Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required on all students.
  10. Prepare correspondence reports and records using computer.
  11. Make appointments for and maintain schedule for the school nurse.
  12. Maintain documentation of health office activities including reportable accidents communicable disease data six-week reporting and referrals to school nurse.
  13. Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
  14. Prepare and arrange bulletin boards displays models etc.
  15. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws state and local public health rules State Board of Education rules and board policy in health services area.
  16. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  17. Maintain confidentiality.
  18. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services.

Equipment Used:

Computer scanner copier and all other appropriate office equipment thermometer blood pressure monitor audiometer glucometer nebulizer suction machine and any other medical equipment necessary for the delivery of specialized health care procedures.

Working Conditions:

Responsibilities require contact with sick and/or injured person(s) which may include exposure to bodily fluids disruptive behavior and communicable disease. There may be exposure to potentially hazardous medical equipment and/or chemicals. Mental demands require emotional control under stress. Physical demands/environment factors may require standing for long periods of time frequent stopping bending pulling and pushing. Moderate lifting required. Frequent district-wide travel.
