The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing machine learning artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding processing and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

LTI is seeking a Research Associate to assist with working on our ongoing research project examining the safety of tool-using AI agents exploring how to make AI agents safer using on-the-fly mitigation methods. Ultimately this will involve conducting the research and writing it up as an academic paper.

Core Responsibilities

  • Help with designing and implementing evaluation frameworks to assess the safety and alignment of autonomous AI systems.
  • Analyze model behavior in open-ended environments and document safety implications.
  • Help co-author and contribute formal research papers for publication in AI safety and NLP venues.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required. Masters degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years of research experience in machine learning natural language processing AI safety or AI systems.
  • Strong analytical communication problem-solving and reasoning skills.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
