This position performs a broad range of skilled carpentry and building maintenance work across municipal facilities and infrastructure. The Carpenter 1 carries out assigned work independently within established work plans and standards and receives technical guidance from the Carpenter 2 and direction from the Manager Buildings. This position requires strong journeyperson trade skills reliability and the ability to complete assigned work safely efficiently and in accordance with applicable codes and standards. Hours of work may include shift work and weekends as assigned. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Perform carpentry construction repair renovation and maintenance work on municipal buildings structures and infrastructure (including docks ramps staircases bridges and related assets).
- Complete assigned work in accordance with drawings specifications work plans and applicable building codes and safety standards.
- Carry out routine maintenance repairs and construction tasks as assigned.
- Use tools equipment and materials safely and appropriately in the performance of duties.
- Participate in inspections and repairs under the technical guidance of the Carpenter 2 or direction of the Manager of Buildings.
- Follow established safe work procedures and WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area including proper use and care of tools and equipment.
- Maintain basic records and documentation related to completed work as required.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors colleagues and other departments regarding assigned tasks.
- Work independently or as part of a team depending on operational requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills Qualifications and Abilities:
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Possession of a valid Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate of Qualification in Carpentry.
- A minimum of three (3) years of recent experience performing journeyperson-level carpentry and building maintenance work.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret drawings specifications and building code requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to perform carpentry work safely efficiently and to an acceptable standard of quality.
- Ability to follow work plans technical guidance and established procedures.
- Good organizational skills and ability to complete assigned work within established timelines.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and cooperatively as part of a team.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills to work cooperatively with colleagues and other departments.
- Basic computer skills and ability to use email and standard office software for communication and record keeping (Microsoft Office environment).
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 BC Drivers Licence; satisfactory drivers abstract required.
- The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
