Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time overseeing and evolving Ontarios electricity market engaging with government municipalities and Indigenous communities and planning for Ontarios future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation protecting the system from threats advancing the provinces energy conservation programs and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources well need in the decades to come.
This is a unionized position that falls within theResource and System Adequacy Division in the Power System Development Business Unit.
As part of the Resource Adequacy and Sector Evolution team this role sits within the Resource and System Adequacy division which leads the implementation and evolution of the Resource Adequacy Framework the IESOs strategic approach to acquiring electricity supply to meet demand reliably and affordably. The divisions functions include research stakeholder engagement design and execution of acquisition mechanisms to meet system needs including acquiring energy capacity ancillary services and transmission resources.

The Senior Advisor Resource Adequacy & Sector Evolution plays a key role in helping the IESO anticipate and address challenges in procuring the resources needed to meet future electricity demand. This position combines a forward-looking view with ongoing analysis of impacts and trends to design and run procurements that are practical efficient and adaptable to support sector evolution. The Senior Advisor will advise on the technical commercial and policy considerations impacting electricity resource acquisition activities for the organization including initiatives targeting energy and capacity supply services transmission resources and various ancillary / operability services.
The Advisor will engage with stakeholders across the organization as well as with developers the finance community and other procurement entities in Canada the U.S. and beyond to share insights and identify emerging challenges. They will analyze procurement data and trends to generate actionable recommendations and they will monitor policy developments to understand their potential impact on resource adequacy.
This is a multifaceted evolving role that requires curiosity initiative and strong analytical skills. Senior Advisors have the opportunity to investigate complex questions with a high degree of ambiguity ranging from supply chain issues to policy shifts and chart a path forward.
What youll do
In this role youll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:
- Analyze evaluate and solve technical and commercial issues associated with electricity procurement initiatives
- Conduct due diligence on facility performance cost estimation financial return analysis and risk analysis
- Help oversee the design of procurement mechanisms strategies and processes appropriate for the type of procurement and the type of resource being sought
- Support stakeholder relations and network development internally with key partners and externally with government agencies and industry contacts
- Develop manage and enhance procurement initiative infrastructure including proposal evaluation tools prescribed forms and program-specific website
- Help lead the development of procurement documents including program rules request for proposals and contracts. Help manage internal and external legal teams in drafting documents
- Implement and execute procurement processes ensuring that all obligations are fulfilled in accordance with procurement/contract requirements
- Undertake contract negotiations with counterparties ensuring IESO and rate payer interests are upheld and IESOs reputation and professionalism are maintained
- Engage and oversee consultants (legal technical economic etc.) as needed
Role Requirements
Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds each bringing their unique perspectives and skills.
To succeed in this role youll need:
- 4-year University Degree in engineering or business (commerce or economics) is preferred; math science political science and public policy related degrees with relevant experience will also be considered; post-graduate degree an asset
- 8-10 years of relevant work experience including the period of adjustment on the job itself
- Understanding of electricity resource procurement design and execution including RFPs auctions standard offers and negotiated contracts is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to conduct technical financial and risk analysis (e.g. cost estimation and financial modelling)
- Solid understanding of electricity generation transmission and distribution energy economics and regulated power markets
- Experience developing and negotiating commercial contracts in collaboration with legal and technical advisors
- Proven ability to research lead projects manage crossfunctional teams and oversee external consultants
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills including experience working with government regulators and industry participants
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex concepts clearly
- Highly organized adaptable and collaborative with sound professional judgment
