The University of Sydney School of Dentistry (Sydney Dental School) is ranked amongst the top dental schools internationally and is one of the largest dental schools in Australia. It has campuses in the Sydney Dental Hospital (in inner-eastern Sydney) the Westmead Centre for Oral Health at Westmead Hospital (in western Sydney) the Nepean Centre for Oral Health Campbelltown and Fairfield dental clinics (in south-western Sydney) and outreach service-based teaching is undertaken across the state of NSW.
The Practitioner in Dentistry Level B (Lecturer) will prepare students in clinical skills required to meet eligibility requirements for completion of the BOH degree leading to professional registration. They will exercise professional judgement on routine clinical matters to teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students including those on clinical placement. They should have a very strong clinical experience combined with an educational or management focus and may require or seek collaborative consultation for supervision from senior staff when performing novel complex or critical tasks.
The Practitioner (Level B Lecturer) roles in the Sydney Dental School are for general dentists/oral health therapists (Adult Scope) with more than 3 years clinical experience in Australia who have already developed skills and competencies. They will generally hold primary employment (including self-employment) outside the University in public or private health will contribute to teaching and learning by applying their clinical experience to inform best practice teaching with a focus on coaching and developing students in the provision of best-practice patient care within a real or simulated clinical setting (including training in professional standards of the discipline) and related or incidental activities. This will include assisting academics in writing/ development of exam questions and undertaking student assessment in semester or formal exam periods with academic oversight. Annual leave during the academic teaching semesters is not preferred as this is the primary teaching contact period but up to a week can be prearranged provided contact teaching is not affected.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
undertake teaching and training of BOH students in clinical setting (which can include some but not solely teaching in a simulated clinical setting) applying clinical experience and expertise to inform best practice teaching
deliver professional standards training and education to BOH students to prepare them to meet eligibility requirements for completion of a degree leading to professional registration
applies clinical knowledge and experience to inform high-quality patient care whilst also supervising the training of pre-registration students
engage in high-quality clinical teaching and learning experiences which meet the Universitys expectations and standards for clinical education staff. This may involve delivering teaching to students whilst also delivering treatment to patient
provides advice mentoring and guidance relevant to the stage of training to students to prepare them for engaging in clinical practice
contributes to innovative clinical education practices to improve educational outcomes
contribute to the development of assessment material and undertake contemporaneous sessional assessment with feedback to students and theory and practical assessments in the formal assessment periods (marking exam papers and practical models)
applies expertise in clinical practice to provide training and support to other academic staff on effective innovative and contemporary clinical practice
provide mentoring and guidance to students and Level 1 Professional Practitioners role modelling effective patient interaction and care
supervise undergraduate or pre-registration students on observational or clinical placements or students undertaking internships/work experience
contribute to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought contribution collaboration excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled
maintains an understanding of the Universitys strategic agenda and actively contributes to furthering that agenda
appropriately represent the University in partner organisations clinical settings and the community maintaining productive links between the university and clinical or industry partners
assisting academics in marking all assessment activities during the formal and reassessment periods each semester including but not limited to simulation clinic/clinical/theory paper/assignment/OSCE and viva assessment marking
writing and development of exam questions with academic oversight
undertake other duties and contribute to projects appropriate within the classification level as required.
About you
APHRA registered
Bachelors degree in relevant field
qualified health professional or practitioner with more than 3 years clinical experience who have already developed skills and competencies
significant experience working in a clinical setting and proven ability to apply expertise and knowledge to inform clinical practice teaching
experience in clinical or simulated teaching and learning in a tertiary environment (or clinical placement) as evidenced by student coaching and skills development
demonstrated success in implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives with a clinical and patient care focus
a network of relationships with key academic clinical and professional institutions partners and stakeholders.
