Introduction
LUCA School of Arts is a creative hub for almost 5000 people: more than 4000 students and 800 colleagues. In the context of the expertise network Artistic Practices to be appointed within the team Music Performance (Leuven) LUCA is looking for a Senior Lecturer in Choir Conducting.
The proposed starting date is 1 September 2026.
Key responsibilities
You will teach within the Bachelors and Masters degree programs in Music ensuring continuity through weekly contact sessions rehearsals and leadership of artistic projects. The position is grounded in an active artistic practice as a choir conductor. As a principal subject teacher in choir conducting you guide students in their development into engaged and ambitious choir directors for non-professional and professional your lessons you inspire students mastery as a choir conductor by sharing advanced perspectives on conducting technique rehearsal methodology musical leadership and artistic interpretation within a choral context.
You guide students in score study rehearsal techniques stylistic awareness and the interpretation of a broad choral repertoire. Particular attention is given to the development of students communication skills musical leadership and collaboration with singers instrumentalists and other conductors.
You will work with the institutions vocal ensembles and choirs fostering the artistic and professional development of students and guiding them in functioning within choral and ensemble settings. Responsibilities include preparing and leading rehearsals conducting concerts and contributing to artistic productions and projects organized by the department.
You are expected to support students in developing the pedagogical didactic and leadership skills required to work with amateur choirs youth choirs and educational contexts.
Depending on the number of choir projects and choir conducting students you may also contribute to teaching vocal subjects such as ear training or voice.
You foster a positive and inspiring learning environment and actively collaborate with colleagues and artistic staff.
You take responsibility within the conducting department.
You contribute to interdisciplinary artistic and educational projects working together with other departments and artistic disciplines within the institution.
You actively contribute to the development and quality of the study program and you are an ambassador for LUCA for prospective students and alumni.
Finally you are also expected to take on a coordinating or leading role when relevant within LUCA.
Profile
You have extensive artistic experience as a choir conductor.
You have experience working with vocal ensembles and choirs across a broad range of repertoire and stylistic periods and in educational amateur or youth contexts.
You preferably have experience teaching in higher music education.
You demonstrate strong pedagogical skills in conducting and rehearsal methodology.
You inspire students in their artistic and professional development.
You are able to guide students in score preparation rehearsal strategy musical leadership and choral pedagogy.
You are open to interdisciplinary collaboration with other artistic disciplines and departments.
You have a broad professional network within the choral field in Belgium and internationally (considered an asset).
You hold a masters degree in Choir Conducting or an equivalent qualification and have at least six years of relevant professional experience outside education.
You demonstrate strong communication social and collaboration skills. You are collegial a team player and committed to continuous professional development.
You act respectfully and with integrity in line with LUCAs code of conduct. You contribute to an inclusive work and study environment are open to different perspectives and value diversity as an asset.
You are able to teach in Dutch or English and you are prepared (if necessary) to become proficient in both languages. LUCA will ensure language training opportunities.

Offer
This vacancy is for a statutory appointment of indefinite duration for 60% position with the rank of docent (OP3) at LUCA School of Arts. A tenured position can be applied for in due course.
