Director of Laboratory

Full-Time Onsite Monday Friday
Reports To: VP Laboratory Operations

Athena Health Care is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Director of Microbiology Laboratory Operations to lead a high-volume complex laboratory environment. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing microbiology operations driving operational excellence and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.

The ideal candidate will bring deep microbiology expertise a strong background in managing large teams and a proven ability to lead transformation initiatives in fast-paced clinical laboratory settings.

• High-volume laboratory processing approximately 100000 tests per day (60 million annually)
• Oversight of 200 employees across clinical and non-clinical functions
• Collaboration with Laboratory Directors and cross-functional leadership teams

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for microbiology laboratory services
• Oversee daily laboratory operations ensuring efficiency quality and regulatory compliance
• Lead and develop high-performing teams including managers and emerging leaders
• Drive performance improvement initiatives and optimize workflow processes
• Manage technical and platform transitions including multi-site implementations
• Ensure compliance with CAP federal and state laboratory regulations
• Establish performance standards and drive accountability across teams
• Foster a culture of collaboration engagement and continuous development
• Partner with executive leadership to align laboratory operations with organizational goals

Required:

• Bachelors degree in Medical Technology Microbiology or related scientific field
• Minimum 10 years of recent Microbiology experience
• Demonstrated leadership experience in high-volume high-complexity laboratory environments
• Proven success managing large teams and multi-level leadership structures
• Experience overseeing technical/platform transitions (multi-site preferred)
• Strong knowledge of CAP federal and state regulatory requirements
• Active Medical Technologist Certification (ASCP AMT AAB or equivalent)
• Florida Supervisor License (or ability to obtain upon relocation)

Preferred:

• Masters degree in a related field
• 8 years of laboratory directorship experience
• Experience implementing new laboratory programs technologies or products

• Proven ability to build mentor and develop leadership talent
• Strong communicator who fosters trust engagement and accountability
• Ability to influence across diverse teams and organizational levels
• Strategic thinker with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation
• Commitment to building an inclusive high-performing workplace culture

• Salary Range: $140000 $170000 (based on experience)
• Annual Bonus: Up to 20%
