Job Title: Coordinator of Special Education Assessment

and School Health Services

Reports to: Executive Director of Special Education

Dept./Campus: Curriculum and Instruction

Classification: Exempt

Primary Purpose:

Manage the districts special education assessment processes. Ensure that school health and related services are documented and provided to students. Warrant compliance with all state federal and local requirements.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Masters degree

Valid Texas Principal Certification

Special Education Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of federal and state special education law

Understanding of the individual needs of special needs students

Ability to communicate with all levels of special needs students and their parents

Ability to implement policy and procedures

Ability to interpret data

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Experience:

5 years teaching experience in special education

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop and implement an effective special education referral process and ensure that student assessments and recommendations regarding placement and program management for individual students are completed in a timely manner.
  • Monitor the admission review and dismissal (ARD) process districtwide. Participate in committee meetings as needed to ensure that students are placed appropriately and development of individual education plans for students are consistent with district procedures. Ensure that student progress is evaluated on a systematic basis.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to support special education evaluation process.
  • Ensure that the necessary time resources materials and technology to support accomplish educational goals are available. Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs.
  • Direct transition services for special education students entering and exiting public school programs.
  • Collaborate with district level administration to integrate and implement health policies and practices with priorities of the district.
  • Take an active role in facilitating and implementing documentation methods for special education students receiving school health and related services.

Student Management

  • Demonstrate support for the districts student management policies and expected student behavior related to special education program.

Policy Reports and Law

  • Implement the policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and local board policy in area of special education.
  • Compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents required.

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
  • Work in harmony with supervisory faculty and peer personnel.
  • Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.
  • Support and follow administrative and Board policy.
  • Represent the school system to the community in a positive professional way.
  • Maintain a sincere friendly attitude toward patrons.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise and evaluate staff and make recommendations relative to assignment retention discipline and dismissal.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED)

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
