Department Description:
The Major Gift Officer is part of the Development & Membership branch a team of 18 staff members leading organization-wide fundraising efforts. This includes a robust range of programs membership major gifts events legacy gifts grants campaigns and other special fundraising initiatives. The Development team is critical to identifying engaging stewarding and leveraging philanthropic public and individual support to advance the Parks Conservancys mission in San Francisco Marin and San Mateo Counties.
Position Overview:
This is a term-limited position. The term of the assignment is anticipated to be two years in duration from July 2026 to July 2028. The primary responsibility for the Major Gifts Officer will be to raise $5M or more over the next two years for the Muir Woods: Redwood Renewal Capital Campaign which has an overall fundraising target of $23M. Redwood Renewal is a sweeping multi-year effort to help protect the health of Muir Woods for the next generations. Over the past decade the Parks Conservancy and National Park Service have completed a series of projects leading into this latest effort including implementation of a parking reservation system repairs to the Redwood Creek habitat and updates to Muir Woods water infrastructure. This campaign marks the next chapter focusing on furthering the conservation engagement and sustainability of this rare ecosystem over the next century and beyond. This will be a truly historic effort in one of Americas most iconic national monuments blending crucial environmental stewardship with public access and visitor experience.
Reporting to the Director of Philanthropy and Capital Campaigns the MGO is responsible for identifying cultivating soliciting and growing major gift donors to the Parks Conservancy toward major funding initiatives and projects. This position will work closely with major donors prospects volunteers the Board and executive staff to strengthen relationships in the community with a focus in Marin County and work collaboratively to execute proper moves management strategies to secure major gift support.
This position is based at the Parks Conservancys headquarters at Fort Mason in San -person work two-three days per week is expected with additional offsite meetings as needed.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Manage a robust portfolio of campaign prospects (approx 60-100) developing and executing strategies for cultivation solicitation and stewardship in support of Redwood Renewal
- Establish individualized goals for each prospect based on giving history capacity and alignment with organizational priorities
- Lead and support major gift solicitations partnering with senior staff and campaign volunteers by preparing materials shaping strategy and guiding donor communications
- Maintain an active personal portfolio to drive major and leadership-level giving
- Develop high-quality donor communications including proposals briefings invitations and stewardship materials
- Track progress against goals regularly evaluating performance and preparing updates for senior leadership
- Design and implement moves management strategies across individual prospects and the broader portfolio
- Conduct face-to-face solicitations and support board and staff in their fundraising efforts
- Ensure timely donor acknowledgment and thoughtful ongoing stewardship
- Represent the Parks Conservancy at external events and in key donor-facing settings
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- 5 years of professional fundraising experience with a demonstrated track record of meeting ambitious goals and successfully securing five- and six-figure gifts
- Proven experience in capital campaigns and major gifts fundraising including managing complex donor portfolios and driving progress toward campaign benchmarks
- Strong understanding of the Bay Area philanthropic landscape with preferred familiarity and connections in Marin County donor communities
- Demonstrated success in cultivating re-engaging and upgrading donors particularly in the context of special projects or campaign initiatives
- Ability to develop and execute strategic moves management plans translating high-level fundraising goals into clear actionable steps
- Exceptional relationship-building skills with the ability to engage and inspire donors board members volunteers and senior leadership
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to craft compelling donor-facing materials and deliver clear confident solicitations
- High level of organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities meet deadlines and operate effectively in a fast-paced collaborative environment
- Experience working cross-functionally and influencing without authority with a collaborative and solutions-oriented approach
- Proficiency with donor databases and office technology (experience with Raisers Edge or similar CRM systems preferred)
- Passion for the mission of the Parks Conservancy with an understanding of the environmental cultural and community context of Bay Area parks

- Bachelors degree or equivalent professional experience

Salary/Benefits:
The annual salary is $125000 (Grade 24). As part of our equitable pay practices we will not be able to offer a starting salary beyond this amount.
