The District Spanish Interpreter / Translator facilitates professional formal legal and informational communications between School District personnel and persons whose primary language is Spanish. The District Interpreter Translator will provide the following services: Interpretation Consecutive Interpretation Sight Translation and Translation.
This job is a school year position (10 months) 7.5 hours daily and reports to the ELL and Dual Language Coordinator (Multilingual Education Administrator).
Essential Functions
- Translate all requested district documents from English to Spanish and vice versa.
- Translates IEPs 504s and related documentation to parents.
- Interpret to district staff and parents/students in school events outside school hours.
- Collaborate with staff during parent-teacher conferences and various parent/school staff meetings.
- Maintain Spanish phone line.
- Interpret all requested meetings conference calls and video conferencing including all IEP 504 and other related meetings.
- Assist in educational psychological and language testing as requested.
- Coordinate translation and interpretation requests for all languages.
- Collaboratively maintain the interpreters calendar for all district interpretation/ translation language needs.
- Act as a cultural liaison between Spanish-speaking families and school personnel.
- Act as a parent advocate for Spanish-speaking parents and students who may be unfamiliar with their rights and participation in education.
- Maintain interpretation/translation services log for data collection purposes.
- Maintain professional confidentiality with student and family records.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Assist with new interpreters training on the topics.
Skills Knowledge and Abilities
- SKILLS: Operating standard office equipment; using pertinent software applications such as Microsoft Word Excel Google Suite etc.; composing a variety of documents; facilitating group discussions in two languages; demonstrating exceptional Spanish and English language expressive receptive and written skills; and effective interpretation skills.
- KNOWLEDGE: Technical terminology educational terminology legal terminology special education terminology educational methods and interpreters code of ethics.
- ABILITIES: gather collate and/or classify data; analyze and solve practical problems; flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work effectively with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team; and possessing sound emotional judgment.
- EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 2 years of experience in education is preferred. Minimum of 2 years experience in translating/interpreting preferred.
- EDUCATION: Minimum of a Bachelors degree; engage in ongoing professional development offered. Translation / Interpretation Certification.
