Job Summary

We have an opening for a Systems Engineer in the Technical Services Department (TSD) within the Environment Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate. As a Systems Engineer you will support radioanalytical laboratories and radiation exposure dosimetry groups to demonstrate comprehensive compliance with radiation protection standards.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

You will

  • Leverage nuclear engineering domain knowledge to develop enhance and maintain laboratory codes to monitor radiation exposure for LLNL workers.
  • Ensure analytical results dose evaluations/assessments and reports are of the highest accuracy and quality.
  • Collaborate with IT support personnel in the development upgrade and maintenance of the personnel dosimetry databases and their applications.
  • Provide technical assistance to TSD and other ES&H divisions in addressing internal and external dosimetry issues.
  • Conduct studies and prepare reports on relevant technical issues.
  • Develop codes and tools to automate the processing analysis and archival of dosimetry data.
  • Explore a variety of approaches within established practices and procedures and recommend and implement improvements or new processes as appropriate.
  • Follow defined policies and practices in selecting methods techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results based on in depth analysis of multiple identifiable factors.
  • Work with dosimetry technical specialist to prepare review and submit reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelors degree in nuclear engineering radiation protection a related science engineering or related technical field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Comprehensive technical understanding of external dosimetry including universal nuclear accident dosimeters.
  • Practical experience and/or working knowledge in one or more of the following: radiation detection/counting instrumentation statistical evaluation Thermo-luminescent dosimeter (TLD) processing including ability to analyze information to determine proper methods and techniques.
  • Experience working with teams developing and deploying high quality software products; specifically gathering requirements implementing software debugging and remediating issues coupled with prior coding and/or automation experience.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to technical staff and management.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple moderately complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities tight and changing deadlines and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
  • Experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations and meeting schedules.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Masters degree in a related field.
  • Understanding of applicable Federal regulations including 10 CFR 835.
  • Experience with the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) process for internal or external dosimetry systems.
  • Experience working in a research and development environment (e.g. DOE National Laboratory) with a broad range of radiation types exposure geometries and dose rates.
  • Broad experience with programming languages data management systems SQL Oracle server databases and creating SQL Queries.

Pay Range

$129150- $163764 Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employees position within the salary range will be based on several factors including but not limited to specific competencies relevant education qualifications certifications experience skills seniority geographic location performance and business or organizational needs.
