Job Summary

The Prototype Trim Technician - Seat Laboratory is responsible for accurately cutting sewing and assembling seat trim covers as well as supporting the complete seat build process from individual components to finished product. This role ensures high-quality craftsmanship adherence to specifications and collaboration with cross-functional teams to support prototype development and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Trim Cover Cutting & Preparation

  • Read and interpret patterns work instructions and digital cutting layouts for seat trim covers.
  • Cut fabric leather vinyl and other materials to specification using manual and automated cutting tools.
  • Inspect materials for defects and verify correct grain orientation and color matching prior to cutting.
  • Label and organize cut parts to ensure efficient workflow to sewing and assembly stations.

Sewing & Trim Cover Assembly

  • Operate industrial sewing machines (e.g. single-needle double-needle overlock walking foot).
  • Assemble seams top-stitching and decorative features in accordance with quality and durability standards.
  • Apply foam scrim and reinforcements per build specifications.
  • Perform in-process quality checks for stitch accuracy seam allowances and dimensions.

Seat Build & Assembly

  • Install trim covers onto seat cushions backs headrests and armrests.
  • Assemble seat components including frames foam plastics and hardware per instructions.
  • Use hand and power tools to complete mechanical assembly safely and effectively.
  • Verify fit finish and functional operation of completed seats (adjusters recliners headrests etc.).

Quality Safety & Documentation

  • Follow standard operating procedures quality standards and inspection criteria.
  • Document production results defects and rework in required systems or forms.
  • Escalate quality issues equipment concerns and process deviations promptly.
  • Maintain a clean organized and safe work environment in accordance with 5S and EHS standards.

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

  • Provide feedback on patterns methods and tooling to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Support prototype builds trials and engineering changes for new seat designs and materials.
  • Collaborate with engineering quality and production teams to resolve issues and implement best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in seat trim sewing upholstery automotive interiors furniture upholstery or related manufacturing/production environments.
  • Proven ability to cut and sew complex trim patterns with tight tolerances.
  • Experience assembling complete seats or similar upholstered products from components to finished assemblies.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in operating industrial sewing machines and related equipment (cutters skivers binders sergers etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret patterns drawings work instructions and digital layouts.
  • Familiarity with basic manufacturing software and systems including:
    • Pattern or nesting software (e.g. Opti Tex or equivalent).
    • HMI interfaces for work orders and production tracking.
    • Basic office/manufacturing systems for quality and reporting.

Quality & Craftsmanship

  • Strong attention to detail in stitch quality seam alignment and overall appearance.
  • Ability to perform self-inspection and correct defects at the source.

Problem Solving & Collaboration

  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot fit finish and functional issues.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to resolve production challenges.
  • Effective communication skills in a team-oriented environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand bend and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move seat components and materials within safe limits.
