POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chemist is a member of the Product Controls Department reporting directly to the Laboratory Manager. The Chemist will be a leader and champion of quality data good communications safety value addition and continuous improvement within the Lab. Further the Chemist must demonstrate servant leadership with regards to support of Technicians Area Teams and the Lab salary group. Successful candidates must possess strong leadership interpersonal and organizational skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conducts comprehensive chemical analysis of water petroleum gasoline solvents and other compounds to identify elements or determine quantities contained by the use of standard tests and procedures. Ensures the laboratorys operations adhere to the elements of good lab practice and applicable standards of quality control and quality assurance.

• Records and analyzes the results obtained assembles and summarizes data issues Certificate of Analysis (COAs) to external and internal customers.

• Recommends procedures to eliminate solve or correct unfavorable conditions found as a result of analysis. Conducts troubleshooting and develops corrective actions to mitigate unfavorable conditions found as a result of analysis and is knowledgeable on instruments in the lab and able to maintain equipment functionality.

• Verifies questionable tests by ensuring proper procedure was applied checking the equipment and chemical solutions used and recommending corrections as needed.

• Keeps abreast of the latest developments and changes in testing methods equipment and techniques used in the chemical field. Becomes acquainted with the latest type of machines handling electronic type analysis operates such machines and trains others in their operation takes care of the maintenance and outlines special techniques to be used for their operation.

• Writes and reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); Develops training technicians and ensures compliance with MPC Lab Training Standards.

• Acts as a liaison between the laboratory and other stakeholders in the company.

• Installs documents and trains laboratory personnel on new procedures or analytical methods.

• Routinely reviews and updates statistical quality control (SQC) charts and reviews raw data and instrument logbooks for abnormalities trends or other leading indicators that could cause a future out of control condition.

• Leads special projects assignments (e.g. new equipment test runs etc.) and incident investigations.

• Promotes and enforces all regulatory and quality assurance compliance programs.

• Ensures that appropriate supplies are available for each laboratory method (i.e. standard reference materials spare parts consumables etc.)

• Promotes laboratory and refinery safety processes.

• Implements and supports best practices as defined by the Laboratory Manager with respect to product quality management.

• Promotes clear expectations for safe and reliable laboratory operations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelors Degree with 16 hours of college-level chemistry required. Chemistry Degree preferred.

• Zero (0) years or more of chemical analysis and laboratory experience required.
