POSITION OVERVIEW:
The TVI Aide provides instructional and classroom support for students in grades K-12 who are blind or have low vision under the supervision of a certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI). The aide assists in adapting materials implementing accommodations and supporting access to the educational environment to promote student independence and participation in school activities.
This position may involve working with students individually or in small groups and may require travel between multiple school sites within the district. The TVI Aide will be required with TVI support to learn basic braille and vision-related assistive technologies to support student access to instructional materials.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Collaborate with the TVI to support implementation of vision-related instruction and accommodations.
- As directed by the TVI adapt modify or create instructional materials to make them accessible for students with visual impairments (e.g. enlarged print tactile materials high-contrast materials braille materials).
- Under the direct supervision of the TVI the TVI aide will work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce skills and accommodations under the guidance of the TVI and classroom teacher.
- Support the implementation of student accommodations outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Assist students in developing independence confidence and organizational skills related to accessing learning materials and navigating the school environment.
- Assist with student data collection related to vision services under the guidance of the TVI.
- Support students in the classroom by modeling and reinforcing the use of vision-related tools and accommodations (e.g. magnifiers monoculars assistive technology).
- Learn and assist with the use of vision-related assistive technologies such as braille notetakers embossers CCTVs digital magnification tools tablet and smartphone accessibility computer software and built-in accessibility etc.
- Assist in preparing and organizing materials used for vision instruction or accessible classroom participation.
- Implement behavior support strategies as directed by the TVI classroom teacher school counselor or program administrator.
- Collaborate with classroom staff and related service providers to support student participation and access across school settings.
- Participate in staff conference days department meetings and vision-related training.
- Travel between schools within the district as needed to support assigned students.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or TVI.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with children or youth with disabilities in educational or community settings.
- Experience working with students with multiple disabilities.
- Experience supporting students with behavioral or sensory support needs.
EDUCATION LICENSE CERTIFICATION OR FORMAL TRAINING:
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Bachelors degree or related education preferred.
- Training/certification in braille assistive technology and/or specialized instruction and if not obtained at time of hire will require completion of certification within one year of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is normally low to moderate but may become loud when large groups are together in a room. The employee may be required to move from room to room to provide instruction and may have to maneuver in crowded hallways. Duties are typically performed indoors and occasionally outdoors such as playground duty or when students are boarding or unloading buses. The employee may be exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. This position is typically performed in a hazard free clean and healthy environment.
