Job Summary

The Department of Anthropology at Dartmouth College invites applications for a Postbaccalaureate Fellow (PBF) at the rank of postgraduate research associate in the broad area of archaeological sciences. Faculty supervisors this position will be ProfessorsMadeleine McLeester and Jiajing Wang.

PBFs work with department faculty supporting and conducting scholarly research and teaching in anticipation of advancing their skills and experience to prepare for the next stage of their careers. PBFs are expected to contribute to all stages of research including research design fieldwork analyzing data and writing reports. PBFs also contribute in the classroom or lab sections of courses helping undergraduate students with labs review sessions paper editing and grading certain assignments.

The fellows responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a teaching assistant for lab-intensive archaeology courses as directed;
  • Work as a research assistant for archaeological field and lab-based projects as directed.

This position is full-time non-remote in-residence at Dartmouth College in Hanover NH with start date as early as July 1 2026. Appointments are typically for a 1-year are typically for a 1-year period with a salary of $55000 plus health benefits.

PBFs who are working in residence in Hanover NH are eligible forGraduate Special Student status and the ability to take certain Dartmouth courses with the tuition paid by Dartmouth as a working condition fringe benefit. The benefit covers a maximum of 1 course per academic year the PBF is employed and in residence at the College.

  • Bachelors degree in anthropology or a related field with a focus in archaeology completed by the start of the appointment
  • Completed coursework in archaeological method and theory as well as an archaeological field school or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication and writing skills organization and attention to detail
  • Willingness to work as part of a team including on field and lab-based research projects
  • Desirable qualifications include some experience in archaeobotany GIS/remote sensing microscopy or archaeological materials analyses as well as regional interests that align with faculty research areas

This position is eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship for eligible candidates. Employment is contingent on authorization to work in the United States.
