Position Overview
The Lands Council is seeking motivated individuals to join our summer field restoration tech this internship you will learn vegetation and wildlife habitat restoration practices in a riparian setting: erosion control reforestation the use of genetically local native species removal of invasive species herbivory protection revegetation of disturbed areas shading streams and habitat improvement for targeted species. This is an idealposition forsomeonewith a flexible schedulewhois looking for part-time physically demandingenvironmental work that is 100% outside.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with watering and herbivory protection at restoration sites. This primarily involves (1) hauling 5-gallon buckets of water for several hours in hot temperatures to water seedlings; and (2) building deer fencing.
- Assist in additional riparian restoration field activities such as constructing/maintaining beaver dam analogs (BDAs); BDA monitoring; forest thinning; weeding nursery seedlings; installing beaver coexistence structures; loading/unloading equipment and materials; and assisting Watershed Restoration Program Director in other restoration maintenance tasks.
- Work as part of a crew of 4-6 individuals.
- Follow safety practices and guidance from program staff.
Schedule
- Typical workdays: Monday through Thursday
- 4-5 hour shifts mostly morning/early-afternoon hours
- Seasonal position running approximately June through September
- Approximately 15-20 hours per week
Required Qualifications
- Ability to continually lift 60 lbs. for up to 5consecutive hours (two 5-gallon buckets of water).
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work for extended periods in varying weather conditions and under challenging environmental conditions (e.g. rough uneven terrain with tall grass; yellow jackets ticks and other insects; occasional snakes; etc.).
- Willingness and ability to perform monotonous tasks.
- Ability to drive to field sitessome of the time (30-45 minutes from downtown Spokane; mileage reimbursed). Valid drivers license required.
- Pursuing a degree/career in natural resources and the environmental sciences.
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently as part of a small team.
- Positive attitude reliability and sense of humor.
