Job Summary

Maryland Department of Labor is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for an Administrative Specialist III (Investigative Interviewer/Translator (Spanish)) withinthe Division of Labor and Industry Workplace Fraud Unit.

LOCATION OF POSITION

10946 Golden West Drive Hunt Valley MD 21031 (Baltimore County) and 8403 Colesville Road Silver Spring MD (Montgomery County)

Wage & Labor Standards is headquartered in Hunt Valley (Baltimore County) and maintains a satellite office in Silver Spring Maryland and Rockville Maryland. If the selected candidate resides closer to Silver Spring or Rockville the official duty station may be adjusted accordingly.

Main Purpose of Job

Interview/translate oral and written communications from one language to another (English to Spanish) for regulatory enforcement agencies within the Division of Labor and Industry by accurately conveying the meaning of the source language to the target language and vice versa; and provide full performance level of work using independent judgment and analysis by applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with the units laws regulations and policies. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

POSITION DUTIES

Provides English to Spanish and vice versa oral translation and interpretation services in a variety of settings for the Division of Labor and Industry via field inspections investigations meetings training seminars webinars telephone and email etc. accompanies translates and interprets for wage and hour investigators during site visits.

Provide translation services with investigations and examinations during the performance of analysis and research to enhance labor law compliance in the state. Assist in research projects geared towards English as a second language (ESOL) workers and employers.

Provide guidance and translation for paying fines or fees and the dissemination of collected wages. Assist wage investigators during consultation services with employers employees and other interested persons to improve labor law compliance in the state. Performs this function through written and oral communication group presentations and collaboration with employers to establish labor law compliance programs.

Assist in the creation of content translate informational documents including but not limited to reports letters memorandums brochures pamphlets etc. for purposes of communicating and conducting outreach to stakeholder communities (workers and employers) in Spanish and/or English.

Providing bilingual services assist in the process and issuance of work permits or other documents pertinent to the unit. Answer telephone calls and perform intake of complaints.

Other duties as assigned by management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience performing administrative staff clerical clerical technical or secretarial work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent level of fluency inwritten and oral English and Spanish.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.
