Job Summary

Roles/Responsibilities:

Cloud Infrastructure Planning

  • Architect end-to-end cloud solutions by creating comprehensive blueprints for networks servers storage security frameworks IAM roles and access network segmentation encryption and deployment environments that align with business requirements.
  • Design environments that span on-premises and multiple public cloud providers and optimize resource placement.
  • Establish architectural standards and best practices for various infrastructure services including tagging guardrails Cloud Service Providers (CSP) naming conventions etc.
  • Define standards for automated provisioning and configuration to ensure repeatable and consistent deployments.
  • Design high-availability systems and comprehensive backup strategies to ensure minimal downtime and business continuity.
  • Use monitoring and analytics to analyze cloud spending and design cost-effective solutions by right sizing resources and leveraging reserved capacity.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies such as native services artificial intelligence and serverless computing to improve system performance.
  • Provision and manage specialized high-performance computing clusters specifically for training large language models (LLMs) and to support Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) workloads.

On-Premises Infrastructure Support

  • Support maintain and administer enterprise physical and virtual server environments.
  • Perform installation configuration maintenance and troubleshooting of Microsoft Windows Server and Linux operating systems.
  • Support and administer virtualization platforms including Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Perform routine server patching updates and vulnerability remediation in accordance with CalSTRS security and change management policies.
  • Monitor system performance availability and capacity; identify and remediate infrastructure issues.
  • Participate in infrastructure lifecycle management including hardware refreshes and system upgrades.

Cloud Infrastructure Support (AWS and Azure)

  • Provision configure maintain upgrade and support cloud infrastructure resources in AWS and Microsoft Azure.
  • Support server-based workloads including AWS EC2 instances EBS volumes VPC components IAM roles and policies and Azure Virtual Machines Virtual Networks and storage services.
  • Monitor cloud infrastructure performance availability and cost efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve cloud infrastructure incidents and service disruptions.
  • Support hybrid connectivity and integration between on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Perform routine server patching updates and vulnerability remediation in accordance with CalSTRS security and change management policies.

Backup Recovery and Business Continuity

  • Support enterprise backup and recovery solutions for on-premises and cloud-hosted systems.
  • Perform backup monitoring restore testing and recovery activities as required.
  • Assist with disaster recovery planning documentation and testing efforts.

Documentation and Knowledge Transfer

  • Create update and maintain technical documentation including architecture blueprints detailed infrastructure design system diagrams configuration documentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide knowledge transfer and technical guidance to CalSTRS staff as requested.

Operational Support and Collaboration

  • Provide infrastructure support including incident problem and change management activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with CalSTRS staff vendors and stakeholders.
  • Communicate technical issues risks and recommendations clearly and professionally.
  • Adhere to CalSTRS policies procedures security standards and service level expectations.

Deliverables

  • Deliverables may include but are not limited to:
  • Comprehensive blueprints and roadmaps for hybrid infrastructure architecture.
  • Detailed infrastructure design documentation and system diagrams.
  • Status reports as requested by CalSTRS.
  • Backup and recovery test results and documentation.
  • Knowledge transfer materials and operational runbooks

Mandatory Skills:

  1. One or more of the following certifications:
    1. AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional
    2. Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert
    3. Certified Kubernetes Administrator
  2. At least five (5) years of experience with infrastructure as code (IAC) using tools like Terraform Ansible AWS CloudFormation or something similar.
  3. At least five (5) years of experience developing automation scripts and managing cloud functions using Python Ruby Go or something similar.
  4. At least five (5) years of experience providing operational support maintenance monitoring and incident resolution for cloud-based infrastructure services including server-based workloads hosted in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Microsoft Azure or comparable public cloud platforms.
  5. At least ten (10) years of experience performing IT infrastructure engineering administration and operations support for enterprise computing environments including physical and virtual servers cloud based instances storage systems backup platforms and related infrastructure components.
  6. At least ten (10) years of experience supporting maintaining and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows Server and/or Linux server operating systems in a production

Desirable Skills:

  1. Experience providing consulting services to State and/or Federal agencies in the USA.
  2. Experience with modern architecture patterns and standards and designing cloud solutions for Experience architecting for high-performance serverless computing and managing applications in containers at scale using Docker and Kubernetes.
  3. Experience with public cloud infrastructure services including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or Microsoft Azure such as Amazon Elastic Block StoreAWS (EBS) Amazon Virtual Private CloudAWS
  4. (VPC) AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and Azure Virtual Machines Virtual Networks Storage Accounts and identity and access management services.
  5. Experience with virtualization technologies including Microsoft Hyper-V and/or comparable enterprise virtualization platforms supporting server provisioning performance tuning and lifecycle management.
  6. Experience with enterprise backup recovery and disaster recovery solutions including backup scheduling restore testing and recovery procedures for both on-premises and cloud-hosted workloads using tools like Veeam.
  7. Experience with server patching update management and configuration management processes to ensure system security stability and compliance using tools like Tanium.
  8. The proposed project person will be able to adhere to the hybrid working model by working on-site 2-3 days per week at CalSTRS Headquarters West Sacramento CA. If no provide a short explanation. (no points)
