The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for leading departmental operations resources and staff to achieve organizational and clinical objectives. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care while maintaining compliance with clinical administrative legal and ethical standards.
The Director oversees surgical services operations including patient care delivery staffing budgeting performance improvement and quality assurance. This position also involves collaboration with leadership teams to ensure efficiency safety and regulatory compliance across all surgical service lines.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Operations
Direct departmental activities and allocate resources to meet organizational goals
Develop implement and maintain goals policies and standards aligned with clinical administrative legal and ethical requirements
Oversee daily operations including patient care delivery service level management information systems usage and complaint resolution
Ensure performance improvement and quality control objectives are consistently met
Staffing & Workforce Management
Plan and manage staffing needs including recruitment onboarding scheduling and orientation
Conduct employee performance evaluations and support disciplinary processes when necessary
Promote ongoing education training and professional development for staff
Financial Management
Develop monitor and evaluate departmental budgets
Ensure operations remain within approved financial allocations
Identify opportunities for cost efficiency without compromising patient care quality
Compliance & Quality Assurance
Coordinate and oversee internal and external audits
Ensure compliance with hospital policies accreditation standards and regulatory requirements
Clinical Oversight (RN Responsibilities)
Apply the nursing process in assessing planning implementing and evaluating pediatric patient care from admission through discharge or transfer
Provide expert clinical care education and patient advocacy in the surgical setting
Serve as a leader and mentor to nursing and assistive personnel
Demonstrate strong knowledge of clinical procedures disease processes interventions and pharmacological treatments
Manage patient assignments effectively within required timelines
Minimum Requirements
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
Bachelors degree in Nursing from an accredited institution
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire
Minimum of 5 years of experience in Surgical Services as an RN including leadership experience at Manager or Director level
