This interdisciplinary project investigates how generative AI can be incorporated into the building design and operation process. Particularly we seek to support architects to design more sustainable buildings through simulation-assisted performance feedback regarding initial design concepts. We will explore how AI systems can augment professionals creativity toward concurrent optimization of human health and energy efficiency. This PhD position will combine fieldwork in real-world architectural settings with human-centric environmentally responsible application of AI tools.
You will join an active interdisciplinary research team with strong ties to architectural practice.
The position is open for appointment as of August 1st 2026 or soon hereafter. The position is a three-year role located in the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg Universitys Technical Faculty for IT and addition to the Department of Computer Science the project involves close collaboration with the Department of Architecture Design and Media Technology and is part of a larger project involving at least one other PhD candidate and a postdoctoral researcher. The candidates workplace will be in Aalborg.
Your work tasks
The PhD candidate will study the needs of creative professionals in particular architects in integrating decision support during design ideation. Your work will combine requirements gathering with interactive system development and empirical evaluation in real world settings. You will have the opportunity to shape the project based on your interests and in collaboration with a leading architectural firm.
The candidate is expected to publish in leading Human-Computer Interaction venues.
Your competencies
You hold a masters degree in human-computer interaction computer science interaction design applied artificial intelligence architectural design or a related field. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds demonstrating strong collaboration skills and the ability to acquire new skills and technologies. Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English are essential. Prior expertise in architecture is not required. Experience with HCI research digital prototyping and/or AI tools is an advantage.
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Salary and terms of employment
The employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (in Danish).
Salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement) (in Danish)
There is a mutual probationary period of 3 months for the position.
