Details of Service
This post is located in Cork University Hospital (CUH) which is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland; it is the only level 1 trauma centre in the Republic of Ireland and is one of the countrys eight regional cancer units. The Laboratory provides analysis of patient specimens for inpatient outpatient and community patients. It also provides some referral services for specialised testing for other laboratories in the organisational area.
Histopathology CUH is a fully sub-specialised department including histopathology neuropathology perinatal pathology cytology immunohistochemistry dual colour dual-hapten in situ-hybridization (D-DISH breast pathology) molecular testing immunofluorescence and electron microscopy.
The service also has extensive interest in research and development and is a teaching site for Medical Scientists and related health professionals
The service has been awarded ISO15189:2022 accreditation. It operates a Quality Management System that conforms to this standard.
Reporting Relationship: The post holder will report to the Chief Medical Scientist or other nominated personnel.
Purpose of the Post
To participate as a Medical Scientist Staff Grade (Histopathology) in providing a high quality and efficient laboratory service to Consultants Doctors and their patients within the hospital and the community.
In co-operation with the Senior Medical Scientists clinical staff and the Chief Medical Scientist the post holder will participate in the delivery of a quality laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of its patients and is consistent with the Laboratory Quality Statement mission vision values and strategic plan of the organisation.
