Job Summary

The Animal Science Center is part of the Office of Research a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work; from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public.

Summary:

Perform a variety of tasks related to the care of all Animal Science Centers laboratory animals and the maintenance of the animal facilities. Some of those species being mice rats hamsters rhesus macaques zebrafish zebra finches and more. Technicians can be rotated across facilities and at times assigned specifically to facilities needing coverage.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide feed and water and basic husbandry care Cleans and sanitizes cages according to prescribed standards.
  • Observes animals daily to assess health environmental conditions and social environment.
  • Maintains accurate and up to date cage cards animal histories and other records as required.
  • Receive and house newly arrived animals from approved vendors according to established procedures.
  • Maintain housing rooms storage areas and procedure rooms daily including sweeping and mopping floors; sanitizing equipment.
  • Practices safety environmental and biosecurity control methods Completing duties as assigned in both ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 facilities.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED 1 year of experience in the field or related setting ALAT certification (not required)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of animal husbandry requirements methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.
  • Foster positive and constructive workplace relations.
  • Time management of assigned duties when working independently.
  • Flexibility working in a changing environment Knowledge of local state and federal regulations pertaining to animal husbandry.
  • Attention to detail Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to observe assess and record symptoms and progress.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively across multiple streams computer tablet smartphone.

To accomplish this goal this candidate would complete daily quality animal care for all housed research animals in the USDA facility such as primates chinchillas rabbits as well as other species when needed.

The candidates assignments would include animal husbandry tasks such as cage changing animal health checks veterinary health monitoring and treatment cage wash and facility maintenance i.e. sanitization of equipment research housing areas and materials. Additional responsibilities include animal receiving and housing census data collection and others as assigned.

Animal Science Center is looking for a candidate who is ready to work in a dynamic positive work environment surround by likeminded individuals. Someone who can complete assignments independently and as a whole. An ideal candidate would be eager to learn and can effectively communicate via email text call through smartphone and computers. Skills such as accurate recording keeping and detail oriented would be desirable for this position. This candidate would be professional and courteous while building working relationships with researchers veterinary staff and co-workers.
