Job Description

Job description

The Genome Diagnostics section of the Department of Genetics at Radboudumc aims to remain at the forefront of genetic patient diagnostics with a particular focus on rare diseases. To achieve this we apply the latest techniques in the field of genetics. We use cutting-edge technologies to study DNA: from advanced sequencing methods to smart algorithms for detecting genetic variants and software that supports their interpretation. Artificial intelligence is increasingly playing a role in analyzing and interpreting genetic information. As an AI engineer you will play an important role in this.

Our processes are highly automated both in the wet lab (e.g. controlling pipetting robots) and in the analysis of large volumes of data (bioinformatics) and interpretation of results. Each year we process several petabytes of DNA data enabling thousands of patients to receive a genetic diagnosis. We achieve this using the latest genetic technologies and largely self-developed and implemented data analysis workflows.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Develop optimize and responsibly implement AI applications in genetic diagnostics workflows
  • Identify where AI can add value in the workflow
  • Stay up to date with the latest AI developments specifically in human genetics
  • Act as a point of contact within the section for AI applications and implementation questions
  • Contribute to expertise development within the bioinformatics and automation team

Place of work

The Department of Genetics provides outpatient care and diagnostics for hereditary diseases and is one of the largest genetics departments in Europe. Research groups conduct groundbreaking studies on the relationship between genes and disease particularly in areas such as cancer hearing loss blindness intellectual disability and congenital disorders.

Within this department the Genome Diagnostics section is part of an ISO 15189:2012-certified laboratory that delivers high-quality genetic diagnostics for patients and their families. The team consists of over 170 employees and performs more than 30000 genetic tests annually covering over 600 genetic conditions using the latest innovative technologies.

The bioinformatics team (15 people) is part of this section and is responsible for all DNA data processing. This includes testing validating and implementing bioinformatics methods for new genetic technologies defining and monitoring quality indicators and developing new data analysis and interpretation systems. This is done in close collaboration with laboratory specialists and the LabICT team (5 people software development).

As an AI engineer you will not only focus on technology but also on integrating it into the primary laboratory processes within an academic environment.

At the Department of Human Genetics you contribute directly to patient care by working in the outpatient clinic or in the diagnostic laboratory where genetic metabolic and neurochemical analyses are addition to your clinical and laboratory responsibilities you support ongoing research projects aimed at improving diagnostic methods and deepening our understanding of hereditary a leading multidisciplinary department you provide high quality genetic healthcare and contribute to scientific progress.
