Role Summary
The Tractor Test Driver & Quality Inspector conducts structured test drives of new or serviced tractors to evaluate performance safety and functional quality. This role identifies documents and communicates quality issues observed during dynamic evaluation-covering drivetrain hydraulics steering/braking electrical NVH (noise vibration harshness) and operator interface then collaborates with Engineering Quality and Service teams to drive corrective actions.
- Perform standardized and ad hoc test drives on tracks fields and mixed terrains (e.g. paved gravel slopes) under varying loads and speeds.
- Validate functional performance of engine transmission PTO hydraulics steering brakes 3 point hitch auxiliary circuits and implements.
- Detect and characterize NVH issues driveline irregularities hydraulic lag/oscillation steering wander brake fade electrical faults sensor anomalies and HMI (controls/displays) defects.
- Inspect for leaks loose fasteners misalignments abnormal wear sharp edges fit/finish and paint/coating defects.
- Verify CAN bus/diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and capture data logs using OEM tools or data acquisition systems.
- Brief cross-functional teams and support root cause analysis; provide feedback to improve test methods and acceptance criteria.
- Conduct pre use inspections (tires fluids lights horn ROPS seat belt).
- Recommend design assembly and process improvements based on test findings
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; Associate degree or technical certificate in Automotive/Diesel Agricultural Equipment or related field preferred.
- 2 years operating tractors or heavy/mobile equipment (ag construction or industrial) in test service or operator roles.
- Valid drivers license and clean driving record; ability to operate manual and hydrostatic transmissions.
- Working knowledge of hydraulics powertrain electrical systems and CAN diagnostics (e.g. reading DTCs).
- Ability to read basic technical drawings service manuals and test procedures.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Frequent climbing on/off equipment; lifting up to 50 lbs; prolonged sitting/operation.
- Work outdoors and in test areas with exposure to noise dust vibration and varying weather.
- Use of PPE (hearing protection safety glasses gloves steel-toe footwear high viz).
Certifications (Preferred)
- OSHA 10/30 or equivalent safety training.
- Forklift or mobile equipment certification (site specific).
- First Aid/CPR.
- CDL not required but ag/heavy equipment operation training is a plus.
