Director, Flight Safety
Job Summary
In collaboration with the Senior Director Safety and Quality the Director Flight Safety is responsible for ensuring the quality completeness and consistency of aviation safety investigations recorded in the safety database. The incumbent provides direct leadership to the team of Safety Officers responsible for conducting investigations across operational sectors.
Responsibilities
- Lead coach and supervise the team of Safety Officers ensuring effective execution of their mandates;
- Ensure that all policies procedures and processes outlined in the Safety and Quality Management System (QSMS) are understood applied and respected within the team;
- Oversee the safety reporting system to ensure timely collection and analysis of information related to hazards incidents and accidents;
- Supervise the day-to-day management of investigations analyses and root cause identification related to all safety events and personally conduct investigations when required;
- Identify safety gaps recommend corrective actions and propose measures to prevent recurrence;
- Inform senior management of known or anticipated risks and changes in risk levels through participation in the Quality and Safety Management Committee (QSMC) and ad hoc meetings;
- Chair safety team meetings and Safety Action Group (SAG) meetings and contribute to the development of operational risk mitigation strategies;
- Supervise and guide the Flight Data Analysis (FDA) program and its analysis team;
- Maintain strong relationships with aircraft manufacturers Transport Canada Civil Aviation the Transportation Safety Board industry safety associations unions and other relevant external stakeholders;
- Oversee the daily management of the Flight Safety Department and support the Senior Director Safety and Quality as required.
Qualifications :
- College or university degree in a related field;
- 10 to 15 years of experience in the aviation industry with significant exposure to aviation safety;
- Holder of a pilot licence or an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) licence;
- Experience in people management and team coordination considered a strong asset;
- Experience in emergency management safety or risk-related fields considered an important asset;
- Strong communication interpersonal and organizational skills with diplomacy tact and impartiality;
- Excellent command of MS Office tools (Word Excel Outlook Teams) and demonstrated ease with collaborative digital tools and AI (e.g. Copilot);
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies;
- Oral and written fluency in French and English*
A good knowledge of French is required for positions in Quebec. The incumbent will be required to communicate and collaborate frequently in English both orally and in writing with colleagues and stakeholders in Quebec the rest of Canada and internationally.
