Applications are invited for Aotearoa New Zealands premier fine arts residency the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship for 2027.
Applications are invited for the Fellowship year 2027 from visual artists normally resident in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Established in 1962 the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship is a 12-month residency which supports artists in the development of their practice while fostering art within the academic community of the University of Otago Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka and the wider community of Ōtepoti Dunedin.
The fellowship aims to foster the development of contemporary visual art and to create connection between practicing artists and the University community and the wider community.
Residency in Ōtepoti during the Fellowship period is expected.
What the Fellowship Offers
A 12month fulltime position (February 2027 January 2028).
A stipend equivalent to a University Lecturers salary.
A dedicated studio.
Access to the University Library including the Hocken Collections and Special Collections (rare books and a print room) and staff facilities.
An exhibition of the artists work at the Hocken gallery at the Fellowships conclusion including an opening function and publication.
Engagement opportunities with University staff including academics and Hocken curators arts professionals (including former Hodgkins Fellows resident in Ōtepoti) and organisations in Ōtepoti.
Who can apply
The Fellowship is open to visual artists normally resident in New Zealand who:
Have produced sufficient work to demonstrate talent and serious commitment to their practice.
Would benefit from holding the Fellowship.
What to include
Applications must include:
A curriculum vitae.
A portfolio of works (including reviews from exhibitions held in the past five years if available).
A proposal of how you intend to make use of the Fellowship if it is awarded to you.
Two referee reports from referees well placed to comment on your writing/art/composition/dance experience (view the template HERE).
