ABOUT SUSTAIN SU
Sustain SU is the University of Alberta Students Unions arm of sustainability. We strive to give students an opportunity to gain and work on leadership skills while also providing them a chance to dip their toes into the world of sustainability. We provide a diverse range of services and opportunities for involvement to the campus community. Our programs during the school year include a sustainable market (Green For Good Market) the campus Bike Library & Workshop a community garden and SUB Sprout our campus Thrift Store to name a few! In the summer well be offering our Bike Library and Workshop team and our Campus and Community Gardens teams. All of our programs are delivered by students and designed for students.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Sustain SU for the Spring and Summer! We are currently recruiting for the Bike Library & Workshop team and the Campus Garden team. The deadline to apply is May 4th 2026 at 9:00AM!
Bike Library & Workshop (BLW)
The Bike Library & Workshop is a community bike shop located in the South Academic Building (SAB 1-13) on North Campus. Students staff and community members can learn how to service their bikes free of charge. Additionally we hold workshops on bike-related topics. The Bike Library also provides low-cost bike rentals all year. On top of that we sell new and used bike parts! Our aim is to promote a sustainable mode of transportation and educate people on how to maintain and repair their own bikes. Last year the BLW team worked on social media projects created a bike rack map of campus facilitated workshops and hosted community bike rides! The BLW collaborates with non-profit organization Bike Edmonton.
Campus and Community Garden (CG)
The Campus Community Garden is a volunteer-run shared garden plot typically run from early spring to late fall to provide locally and sustainably grown food. The garden helps to promote urban agriculture by teaching campus community members sustainable gardening practices. We also help to contribute to food security on campus by providing a portion of our harvest to the Campus Food Bank. Overall we hope to give more people access to growing and gardening while forming community and helping reduce food insecurity. The Campus and Community Garden may seem daunting but there is absolutely no experience required! Our talented senior volunteers can teach you everything you need to know about gardening so that you can grow alongside the plants!
VOLUNTEER OPTIONS
1. Eco Ambassadors (General Volunteers): These volunteers commit 1 - 3 hours per week late May through September. This is our minimum requirement for all volunteer options in the spring and summer months. Most often this looks like one 2 - 3 hour shift per week. Tasks include helping with day-to-day operations at the Bike Library or Campus Gardens and assisting with events as needed. Eco ambassadors will be required to attend orientation On June 1st 2026 in the Students Union Building.
2. Sustainable Leaders (Senior Volunteers): These volunteers commit 5 - 7 hours per week May through this position youll assist the Sustain SU Coordinator in hiring and running the Eco Ambassador (junior volunteer) teams and learning volunteer management skills. This position requires bi-weekly meetings with Sustain SU staff to discuss our programs as well as a minimum of one 3 hour shift per week in the volunteer area (Garden or BLW) Sustainable leaders will be required to attend an in-person interview between May 6th and May 13th followed by orientation between the dates of May 20-22nd (Date pending).
About Sustain SU Volunteer Program and Training
Our volunteers are at the heart of our many programs. Much of what we do comes directly from the hard work of our student volunteers. With this in mind our volunteers will attend training sessions at the start of the volunteer term that are designed to teach them about our programs and how they work communication and attendance requirements and other skills theyll need to work on to thrive in Sustain SU and throughout their professional lives. With this in mind the mandatory dates for the Spring/Summer volunteer programs are as follows:
- Sustainable Leaders are required to attend orientation on a date between May 20 - 22nd
- Both Sustainable Leaders and Eco Ambassadors are required to attend Eco Ambassador Training on June 1st 2026.
