Job Summary
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare the room before and between surgical procedures. Gather appropriate equipment per the procedure and physician preference.
- Prepare and know the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for surgical procedures. Differentiate cleaning and sterilization methods for specific equipment and instruments necessary for specific surgical procedures.
- Apply the principles of asepsis to provide optimum patient care. This includes proper donning and doffing of sterile clothing use of sterilized equipment pre-surgical preparation of the operating room and maintenance of the sterile field throughout the procedure.
- Sterilize count and carefully arrange equipment prior to the procedure. Ensure the count of tools instruments and other supplies used during the procedure matches the initial count.
- Anticipate the needs of and assist the provider during the surgical procedure by retracting tissue and passing surgical instruments always maintaining a sterile field.
- Attend and complete all annual competency education and demonstrate knowledge of either attending or reading all department meetings/minutes/newsletters.
- Precept new and tenured staff and surgical technology students as requested.
- Function as a superuser of selected medical equipment.
- Recognize an emergency and use sound judgement in instituting established procedures. Correct situations in a calm and efficient manner.
- Provide a safe environment for the surgical patient through the appropriate use of anesthetic agents and dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and knowledge of the step-by-step procedure for specific surgical procedures. Develop and improve skills in assisting the surgeon and in the organization of work by learning to use economy on time motion and materials.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon to expedite the procedure thus minimizing patients exposure to trauma.

Education Requirements
- Minimum: LPN scrub or Certified Surgical Technologist graduating from an accredited surgical technology program
- Preferred: Associate Degree in Surgical Technology or Practical Nursing
Experience Requirements
- Minimum: Three (3) years of multispeciality operating room experience in the scrub role as LPN or SCT and member of a national surgical technology organization.
- Preferred: Five (5) years of multispeciality operating room experience including cardiovascular in the scrub role as LPN or CST.
License/Certification Requirements
Minimum:
- BLS (American Heart Association)
- Certified Surgical Technologist (NBSTSA)
