The Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary Research Technologist 1 to join their team.
The Research Technologist 1 performs laboratory technical procedures in support of research investigating pulmonary vascular disease. Under general supervision the Research Technologist will follow established laboratory protocols to culture vascular cells assist with preparation of engineered tissue constructs perform imaging-based assays and collect and organize experimental data.
The position supports the research activities of the PI and other laboratory members and assists with routine laboratory operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Cellular Culture and Microfabrication Work:
- Prepare and maintain endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cell cultures following established laboratory protocols
- Assist with preparation of collagen-based cellular constructs and microfluidic culture systems used for vascular biology experiments
- Follow established laboratory procedures for molecular biology techniques including RNA isolation PCR preparation immunostaining and western blot sample preparation
- Operate standard laboratory equipment including incubators centrifuges biosafety cabinets and microscopy systems
- Record experimental procedures and results in laboratory records
Imaging and Image Analysis:
- Operate confocal multiphoton and light microscopy equipment to perform imaging of engineered microvessels and cellular constructs
- Perform post-processing of imaging data using established analysis pipelines; compile data into summary reports
- Execute imaging-based assays including cellular migration and vascular smooth muscle contraction studies per established protocols
Laboratory Support:
- Maintain inventory and assist with purchasing of cell culture and tissue processing reagents
- Perform laboratory maintenance including solution preparation autoclave transport and incubator and water bath maintenance
- Participate in laboratory meetings and meetings with collaborators
- Prepare technical data summaries and progress reports for PI review
- Support manuscript preparation through data organization and figure preparation as directed
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II or equivalent; OR a bachelors degree in biomedical engineering or related field.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license certification and/or registration.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
- Experience working with microfluidic cell culture systems (e.g. PDMS-based devices)
- Experience preparing or maintaining collagen-based 3D cell culture systems
- Experience culturing pulmonary endothelial or vascular smooth muscle cells
- Experience with confocal or multiphoton microscopy
- Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed laboratory records and follow established research protocols
- Prior research experience in vascular biology pulmonary hypertension or bioengineering
