Job Summary

The Writing Center Assistant Director (AD) works with the Writing Center Director to build and maintain a community of 35-40 student staff members who offer a variety of kinds of writing support to DU students staff faculty alumni and in some cases community addition to serving as a leader in the Writing Center work includes helping to manage the daily operations of a student support center open six days per week including several evenings; to plan for and carry out programming research and assessment; and to educate supervisor and mentor student staff.

The AD and Director negotiate specific responsibilities in relationship to the work of quarterly Faculty and WAC fellows but the workload involves approximately 20-25 hours per week (more in fall less in winter). Each year the AD will have one or more graduate students in leadership positions who provide direct support.

Essential Functions

Leadership

In this leadership role the AD collaborates with the Writing Center Director at all levels. The AD will:

  • Collaborate on strategic planning and assessment.
  • Work with the WC Director to plan communicate and manage our offerings to campus.
  • Identify areas of need in line with interests and specialization and take on special projects as time allows ranging from enhancing accessibility building new programs conducting research and so on.
  • Participate when possible in local and regional writing center community activities and conferences
  • Serve as a member of the Writing Center / WAC Committee.

Operations

  • Establish regular office hours on campus to trouble-shoot problems maintain relationships and be available to staff and colleagues with questions problems and support needs. At certain times on campus and when working from home be available and responsive on the Writing Centers Slack site.
  • Learn and assist with all aspects of our operations including staff supervision scheduling appointment and meeting management outreach to campus partners.
    • Assist with scheduling including building quarterly consulting and meeting schedules managing schedule and shift changes problem-solving and troubleshooting and training students in leadership positions to help with this work as well.
  • Learn and use our primary online support platforms including WC Online Slack Zoom and Canvas and help to train new staff in these platforms.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with the scope of the position as assigned by or negotiated with the Writing Center Director.

Student staff training and supervision:

  • Get to know the entire staff as part of building and maintaining the community of the Writing Center and being responsive in person or on Slack.
  • Participate in recruitment and hiring for new consultants especially in late spring and early summer.
  • Assist with onboarding of in-person and online new staff including developing orientations supervising first shifts establishing relationships and offering support.
  • Collaborate on staff education and professional development including working with the Director to plan and carry out weekly fall training and year-round continuing years with smaller staffs this might include co-teaching the 2-credit writing center training course; in years with larger staffs this might include solo teaching of undergraduate and masters students.
  • Develop meaningful and educational staff meetings and class sessions.
  • Conduct observations of consultations and holding occasional conferences.
  • Mentor consultants who are developing new programs projects research and workshops.

Outreach

The role of the AD in outreach varies from quarter to quarter in relationship to projects and duties taken on by Writing Center Faculty Fellows but generally involves:

  • Collaborate on decisions about outreach and programming to campus partners and stakeholders.
  • Support the work of the Writing Center to introduce and orient groups on campus about our work.
  • Coordinate with the WAC fellow and Writing Center Director.

Required Qualifications

  • M.A. degree in Composition or Rhetoric or ABD or terminal degree in Writing Studies or related fields.
  • Candidates must hold a current appointment as a teaching assistant/associate/full professor in the University Writing Program.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Rate:

The Assistant Directorship is a ten-month position with a stipend of $7000. The appointment term is three years and is open for renewal.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
