The Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) is a focal point of the campus where students faculty staff administration alumni and guests can develop an enduring relationship with the campus. Serving as the campus social hub the SMSU assists in the retention and development of students while encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural pluralism gender equity and ethnic SMSU nurtures an environment conducive to personal growth and development through a variety of cultural social educational and recreational activities. Bridging formal learning and life experiences the SMSU also serves as a training ground for developing student leaders through leadership opportunities and employment that promote an active learning domain.

Functioning as a meeting place on campus the facilities provide a comfortable and relaxing environment with a multitude of services important for the University community.

SMSU North first and second floors house a variety of services and departments including: Coyote Lanes Bowling Alley Coyote Cantina game room social stairs CSUSB Bookstore lounge spaces The Habit Burger Grill dining area an outdoor plaza deck and our massive 12000 square foot conference known as the Student Success floor- the third floor houses our JEDI Centers:Asian and Pacific Islander Desi American CenterFirst Peoples CenterLatinx CenterPan-African Student Success Center Osher Adult Re-Entry CenterQueer and Transgender Resource Center and Womens Resource Center. Other campus entities include: Associated Students Incorporated (ASI)Office of Student Leadership and Engagement Leadership Lab Undocumented Student Success Center and 1000 square feet of study/lounge space.

SMSU South facilities include: a spacious lobby relaxation and study lounge areas meeting rooms a state-of-the-art theater a multi-purpose Events Centerused for major eventsFinancial Literacy Center Graduate Student Success Center and E-Sports Arena. Other services and departments located within the SMSU are Basic Needs Obershaw Den New Student Orientation and Family Programs the Office of Black Student Success and the Division of Student Affairs Office.

Work Schedule

This is a regular full-time hourly position. Willingness to work a flexible schedule as necessary in order to respond to emergency/urgent situations is required. This may include working extended hours evenings weekends and some holidays.

General Purpose

Under the direction of the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) Associate Director of SMSU Operations the Custodian IIis responsible forall aspects of general cleaning and custodial care in the SMSU independently or with a team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides assigned custodial support responds to custodial/cleaning emergencies cleans andmaintainsassigned areas dusts and cleans all surfaces; clean glass doors windows and blinds; clean off graffiti; clean furniture and upholstery.

  • Develops and implements training programs focusing on personal and professional growth for student employees toinclude:building maintenance cleaning set-up and event support policies and procedures eventmanagementand emergency procedures.

  • In conjunction with other SMSU units develops implements and evaluates assessment initiatives leading to effective ongoing development and training programs for student employees.

  • Monitorsthe custodial services budget.

  • Oversees strategic planning of the custodial department to ensure the operational needs of the department and students are met.

  • Implements custodial schedules to ensuretimelyand strategic facility maintenance.

  • Monitors use of assigned areas unlocking as needed and safeguarding from unauthorized access by locking doors and windows.

  • Performs light maintenance duties (i.e.;changing light bulbs).Orders custodial supplies and equipment as needed. Reports facility repair needsidentifiedduringroundscheck fire extinguishers to ensure they are full and operational.

  • Inspectsfacilityequipmentand furnishings to develop schedules for cleaning extermination repair maintenance and general improvements. Operates andmaintainsequipment tools supplies and materials to perform assigned duties; organize work materials and equipment including loading and unloading supplies.

  • Develops and implements inventory control systems and records including Capital Equipment data and equipment repair/replacement plans to minimize loss and increase efficiency. Operates a motor vehicle such as a truck or electric cart to transport custodial equipment materials and supplies.

  • Maintains awareness of safety requirements and conducts all operations with safety of staff and customers asfirst priority andin accordance withthe Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies. Maintains attendance records of safety meetings as required by Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma GED. or equivalent isrequired; and a minimum oftwoyearsof custodial experience is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This positionis responsible forsupervising Custodian I staff and student assistants. Carries out supervisory responsibilitiesin accordance withthe organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Additional Skills Required

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rulesoperatingand maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability towriteroutine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. Ability to use word processing and spreadsheetsoftwareand other related software.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtracttwo-digitnumbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply commonsenseunderstanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
