Job Summary

Introduction

This examination is being given to fill 1 vacancy in the San Joaquin General Hospital and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application. A completed application must be postmarked or received online by the final filing deadline.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Performs speech therapy evaluations and interprets findings.
  • Plans and implements all types of therapeutic treatment for patients; establishes appropriate treatment goals; uses equipment properly.
  • Coordinates treatment programs with physicians nurses professional and para-professional staff.
  • Conduct and/or attends in-service education programs for a variety of departmental and hospital personnel; attends staff meetings and patient conferences.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares written reports.
  • May act as lead therapist and/or preceptor for speech therapists and other professional and/or para-professional staff; may assist with departmental orientation of new staff; may assist in coordinating speech therapy internship programs; may consult with supervisory staff and provide input into employee and intern evaluations.
  • May assist with departmental projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER PATTERN I
Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience as a Speech Therapist II in San Joaquin County service.

OR PATTERN II
Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience as a licensed speech pathologist performing diagnostic and therapeutic speech pathology techniques for a variety of disabling conditions.

AND FOR BOTH PATTERNS
Licenses and Certificates: 1) Current licensure as a Speech Pathologist issued by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board; and 2) possession of a Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Pathology issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Substitution: Satisfactory completion of a Clinical Fellowship Year from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association while employed by San Joaquin General Hospital may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

KNOWLEDGE

Current principles methods techniques equipment and materials used in speech therapy possible reactions of and hazards to patients during treatment and of precautionary and remedial measure; anatomy and physiology related to treatment; psychological and physiological problems of persons with disabling conditions; principles of clinical supervision.

ABILITY

Organize and implement speech therapy treatment programs; conduct individual and group treatment programs; interpret and adapt physicians orders and/or written reports; communicate effectively; work independently; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients families staff and others; maintain excellent customer relations; teach therapeutic techniques and modalities; supervise the work of others.

Selection Procedures

Applicants for part-time and temporary recruitments who meet the minimum qualifications are either referred to the hiring department for further selection or they may be required to take a written examination. If a written examination is given the top candidates may be referred to the hiring department for further selection.

Physical Exam: Some classifications require physical examinations. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the physical examination. The County pays for physical examinations administered in its medical facilities.

Pre-employment Drug Screening Exam: Some classifications require a new employee successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible has passed the drug screen. The County pays for the initial drug screen.

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship (parent child grandparent grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage may not be appointed promoted transferred into or within the department when:

  • They are related to the Appointing Authority or

  • The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other

Department Heads may establish additional limitations on the hiring of relatives by departmental rule.
