To coordinate the Special Education program and ensure campus compliance with Special Education law

Duties of the Special Education Coordinator include but are not limited to the following:

  • Train certified teachers of special population general education teachers and other staff and ensure they understand and comply with confidentiality of students in accordance with both state and federal laws.
  • Participate in professional development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned
  • Assist school administration in scheduling classes for special education and gifted and talented instruction.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff development and in-service programs pertaining to special education and gifted and talented.
  • Monitor SPED/504/CLUE students academic progress that is reflected in the formative and summative evaluations to ensure students meet desired educational goals and use assessment results to coordinate SPED/CLUE instruction and schedule.
  • Compile maintain submit and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required by the district state and federal laws.
  • Ensure SPED/CLUE classroom(s) and/or instructional environment is safe organized and conducive to learning with accessibility to all students.
  • Establish and maintain communication both written and oral with parents students principals and teachers to keep them informed of student progress.
  • Collaborate with district and state personnel and other professionals to carry out school wide instructional or related activities for SPED/504/CLUE students and their parents to better educate them on SPED/504/CLUE services and programs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure SPED/504/CLUE students instructional needs are being met.
  • Advocate for SPED/504/CLUE students to ensure they have an equitable educational opportunity.
  • Continually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
  • Provide SPED or CLUE instruction if assigned. If the coordinator has teaching role comply with the position description of a teacher.
  • Support general education/special education teachers and administrators in implementation of appropriate strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Support implementation of accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs in the general education classroom and during Special Education or CLUE service time
  • Ensure implementation of instructional program which utilizes knowledge of learning styles and modalities and correlate Individuals Education Plans with regular program curriculum guides.
  • Ensure timely dissemination of modifications accommodations and IEPs to the related teachers and personnel and keeps related documentation
  • Plan develop implement and administer programs and services to meet identified needs including development and implementation of new programs and services
  • Schedule prepare and facilitate ARD/IEP/CLUE meetings and serve as a leader of the Admission Review and Dismissal/Individual Educational Plan Committee in a collaborative and professional manner
  • Assist regular school personnel in providing an appropriate educational environment for mainstreamed students.
  • Establish new objectives based on the findings of the evaluation team to be presented as recommendations to the ARD Committee.
  • Suggest alternative teaching methods
  • Assess relation between student performance and handicapping condition.
  • Identify the need for remedial or tutorial assistance to students.
  • Utilize the special education staff and coordinate input to meet the needs of each special education child.
  • Maintain confidential records of assigned students and complete reports and other evaluations.
  • Create and maintain SPED/504/CLUE documentation as required by federal state and district regulations
  • In coordination with the campus discipline committee ensure appropriate handling of discipline issues for Special Education 504 and CLUE students and attend the Discipline Committee meeting for these students.
  • Arrange related services with the outside personnel (Speech Therapist Diagnostician OT PT etc.)
  • Prepare and present reports when needed such as Board of Directors meetings
  • Exhibit a high degree of professionalism in all elements of this position while serving as a contributing member of the MSE and community and a dedicated role model for other employees.
  • Coordinate progress report completion in accordance with district guidelines
  • Manage IEPs in appropriate district software
  • Ensure IEP timeline compliance of assigned caseload
  • Travel to campuses
  • Attend meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Requires a Bachelors degree and endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate
  2. Must be highly qualified
  3. Administrative experience is preferred
  4. Governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the Tennessee Board of Education
  5. Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position

Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Equipment Machinery Tools and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment machinery tools and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference descriptive and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition subtraction multiplication and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems philosophies laws regulations and procedures; to interpret instructions furnished in written oral diagrammatic or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria and the goals and priorities of planning and development programs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Light Work: may require occasional light lifting
  • Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally required
  • Position is in the office setting and may involve prolonged work at a desk in one location
  • Moderate travel is required
