Job Title: Oncology Registrar

Reporting to: Consultant Oncologist and Medical Manpower Manager

Job Summary:

The fundamental philosophy guiding this position will be to promote and preserve the Bon Secours mission values (Respect Justice Compassion Integrity Innovation Quality and Stewardship) and ethos by effective delivery of mission objectives in your capacity as an Oncology Registrar.

Duties and Responsibilities

Patient-Care

  • The Oncology Registrar will participate on the service for all aspects of patient-care: H&P; Notes completion of patient record to meet all JCI requirements.
  • Decision-making; Clinical skills; Procedural skills; Review of all investigations -radiology laboratory microbiology pathology haematology.
  • Formal presentations of all new patients are required during rounds. The Oncology Registrar should review before rounds with consultant. The Oncology Registrar is encouraged to present other inpatients as well.
  • Regular Admissions: All direct acute admissions to the Oncology unit will always be handled by the Oncology Registrar or by the SHO on duty.
  • Will make ward rounds independent of the Consultant Oncologists. These rounds will ensure follow-up and review of all labs/x-rays/scans ordered; follow-up of all critically ill patients; palliative-care/hospice plans. The Oncology Registrar will cooperate with the oncology liaison nurse and other nurse specialists involved.
  • Will write a comprehensive admission note or review Senior House Officers admission notes on all new patients.
  • The Oncology Registrar will use pre-printed chemotherapy orders and write full orders with direct guidance from the Consultant Oncologist pre charting prescription rounds are to be arranged with the pharmacist. First cycle of chemotherapy for any patient has to be counter signed by Consultant Oncologist. Signed patient consent must be obtained prior to chemotherapy.
  • Expected to review day patients as advised by the Consultant Oncologist.
  • Be able to deal with common complications and problems of cancer patients.
  • Supervise Senior House Officers allocated to the oncology service.
  • Carry out protocols and procedures as directed by Terms and Conditions of employment.
  • Work the duty hours rostered understanding that changes can occur at short notice in special circumstances e.g. sick leave. To undertake administrative duties in relation to issue of sickness certificates etc.
  • Protect and enhance the reputation of Bon Secours at all times.

Essential Qualifications

  • Basic medical degree MB or equivalent.
  • Current Medical Council Registration.

  • Previous experience in Healthcare setting
  • Demonstrate importance of evidence-based practice and clinical effectiveness

  • Proven ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients senior medical staff and other health professionals.
